Imaginative play

One of our favourites in our preschool room, an activity you could try at home using things at home - telling a familiar story. Build on recall, use everyday objects and have fun making up little stories with your little people to be creative.

The possibilities are endless - we would love to see any ideas you have 💚

Each week at Minster Yard our preschoolers have been enjoying art club! Creativity is a valuable tool to enable children learn how to problem solve and have ideas which are unique. This is a very important skill for our little one’s future development.

PC Paws who helped us with our health and safety in nursery, retired over the summer. To fill his time he has taken up art! He found out about some famous artists ( Van Gogh, Jackson Po***ck, Monet, Mondrian, Kandinsky etc) and he is keen to share what he has found with our rascals. He has made some home learning bags which will help our little ones learn about famous paintings and artists! So watch this space as we share retired PC Paws amazing art journey.

Home Learning
Now the nights are drawing in and it’s getting chillier🥶 what a perfect time to play a game of silly soup 🍜 with your little one!

Sing the song 🎵 ( the tune doesn't matter)

I'm making soup, soup that is silly,
I will pop it in the fridge to make it nice and chilly.
and in my soup I have a...
… and pop an item in the bowl and give it a mix.
Repeat the song each time you add something in and give the bowl a stir. Keep adding into the bowl until everything is gone. Repeat as many times as you like.

What you will need is -

With your babies (under 2's)

🍲Have a large bowl and spoon
🍲A collection of small items all related i.e. for personal care you could have socks, sponge, toothbrush, nappy.

With your 2-3 year old

🍲Have a bowl and a spoon
🍲A collection of objects which all begin with the same sound (cup, car, coin)

With your preschoolers (3-4 year old) - you will repeat the song but as you add a new item you will repeat the items you have put in. As you do emphasise the first sound sssssssssock, ssssssoap, ssssssspoon, after a few items you can ask if they notice anything, if they all begin with the same sound. When you get confident with it you can put somehting in that doesn't begin with the same sound and see if they notice!!

Rhyming version

with preschool age children you can find objects or draw pictures of things that have the same end sound - e.g. cat - ones that rhyme with "at".

This is such a fun game which you can adapt as your little one gets older or more confident and will help to support their communication and language skills and this in turn will help with phonic understanding and reading.

At Minster Yard we LOVE books. Each month the rooms choose a book of the month which they share with families. They then plan activities which support and extend the rascals understanding of the story!

The creates a love of books and reading which we hope stays with our little ones forever
