New YAC Competition and Special Guest Ask An Archaeologist!

YAC has teamed up with super-duper archaeologist, award-winning children's author, and Honorary President of the Council for British Archaeology, Raksha Dave, to run a new competition for our members.

Raksha is publishing her second children's book, which explores archaeological discoveries from around the world, and we're very excited about it!

Raksha's book features ten treasures, including Ötzi's copper axe (from prehistoric Europe), Tutankhamun's sandals (from ancient Egypt), and the Chacoan jet frog (from Chaco Canyon, New Mexico). The book explores how precious ancient treasures are - not for their gold, but for the stories they reveal about the past.

To celebrate the launch, we'll be running a competition to win a copy of The Archaeologist's Discoveries. Raksha will also be answering your archaeological questions in a special Ask an Archaeologist Q&A video, where she will officially launch the competition.

Do you have a question you'd like to ask Raksha? It could be about archaeology, one of her books, her travels around the world, or her career. If you'd like to submit a question, please email [email protected] by 30 September.

For over 2000 young people, YAC is a place to discover the heritage on their doorstep, meet friends who share their interests and try something new. It’s where young people can build confidence and social skills, discover what they’re capable of and, sometimes, simply feel like they can be themselves. 🎉

🪏Back in July three lucky YAC members spent a day working alongside archaeologists from Archaeology at the University of Reading as part of this year's Dig It! competition! In our latest Dig Diaries, young archaeologists Luca and Florence tell us about their experience digging and processing finds at Cookham, the site of a fascinating Anglo-Saxon monastery in East Berkshire.

The Dig It! competition allows YAC members to spend the day working on a real archaeological site, and is generously supported with bursaries from the Marsh Charitable Trust and tools from Past Horizons - Archaeology Trowels and Tools

📢Could you co-lead Humber YAC?

The Humber branch of the Young Archaeologists’ Club is based in Brough, East Yorkshire and meets monthly on the last Sunday of each month. The club runs hands-on archaeology activities (both inside and out!) for young people aged 8-16.

We are looking for a new volunteer Branch Co-Leader to support the club’s current leader as they begin their maternity leave in January 2027. The new co-leader would collaborate with the current leader from Autumn 2026, with a view to taking over leadership and running sessions until June 2027.

We are looking for someone with experience working with young people and who has an interest in history, archaeology and the world around us – you don’t need to be a trained archaeologist!

From Festival makers to award winners: Gloucestershire YAC have had a very exciting summer! 🥳

Inspired by this year's Festival of Archaeology theme of Archaeology and Nature, young archaeologists created their own ‘Nature Through Time’ trail and recreated some tasty historic recipes. 🌿🥾🧑‍🍳

The club’s hard work was celebrated at their first ever awards event, receiving recognition from the Mayor of Gloucester! 👏

Gloucestershire YAC is based at Gloucester Cathedral and supported by Museum of Gloucester.

Back in June a cohort of YAC leaders headed to Ecclesall Woods near Sheffield for a fascinating and inspiring training day hosted by creative facilitator S.K. Marley, exploring how q***ring prehistory can create a more inclusive history for everyone.

We’re delighted to share this fantastic resource pack to help YAC leaders explore prehistory through a q***r lens and have a go at some of the activities we took part in on the day.

📣 We're excited to announce our latest Dig It! competition!

Three lucky winners will be heading to Poulton, Cheshire on Saturday 29th August. Winners will be hosted by the friendly team at Poulton Research Project and will be investigating a fascinating site that dates back to the Iron Age! 🤩

Winners will also receive a satchel full of archaeological tools from Archaeology Trowels and Tools and can claim an £80 bursary made possible by the Marsh Charitable Trust to help cover the costs of travel, accommodation and/or subsistence.
