We're playing our part in improving children's experiences of cancer treatment at York 🔬
Around 80% of children diagnosed with cancer survive, but for decades, almost no research went into easing what that survival costs.
In 2023, York became home to the first research centre in the world dedicated to changing that: the Candlelighters Supportive Care Research Centre.

For one child, what seemed like tonsillitis turned out to be lymphoma. Treatment began immediately; the side effects were devastating. His immune system became so weak that he developed sepsis.
One in three children diagnosed with cancer will not die from the cancer itself, but from the side effects of treatment. The Candlelighters Supportive Care Research Centre is designed to help children survive the cure.
