A very busy day today in the wig workshop with my Level 5 Media Makeup students!

They’ve just started their Period Hairdressing module and are already building some great foundational skills in setting and dressing hair.

We also had some really interesting discussions and debates around how key historical events, social structures and politics can directly influence the way people looked, dressed and presented themselves during different periods.

🎬 The Art of the Bruise — When Less Is More

Our York College & University Centre Media Makeup students have been refining their SFX bruising techniques, developing the skills needed to create believable injuries for film, television and theatre.

A convincing bruise isn't created by simply throwing colour at the skin. The real skill lies in observation, restraint and understanding the story behind the injury.

💥 What caused the impact?
⏱️ How long ago did it happen?
🎨 What stage of healing is the bruise at?
📸 How will it need to look tomorrow — and again several scenes later?

Students are learning to consider the progression of bruising from fresh impact through the healing process, understanding how colour, intensity, placement and diffusion change over time.

And perhaps one of the most important lessons:

Don't use too much product.

Subtle, controlled layers and carefully considered colour often create far more realism than heavy-handed application. On camera, less can absolutely be more.

This is the difference between simply applying makeup and understanding the craft, continuity and technical knowledge behind professional SFX makeup.

It's fantastic to watch our students refine their eye, their technique and their ability to create believable character stories through makeup. 🎭🎬

We are busy busy! Students have been working tirelessly to complete their final images, Level 4 students have completed their bespoke hand ventilated wigs, level 5 have completed their prosthetics module and Level 6 have completed their final images....well done students some great work!

Such a busy week this week as students work towards mini briefs...from wigcages, baldcaps and bodyart....

What a whirlwind of a week! Our amazing students from all levels have produced some great work this week. From hand knotted crochet wigs using textured hair, designing beautiful hair flowers, creating great character design from. The Sweeney Todd script and flatmolds and some prosthetic limbs 😅🥰🤩

This week, our students have created some fantastic imagery that beautifully showcases their makeup and hair artistry. These professional images will form part of their online portfolios, alongside their showreels and CVs, as they prepare to step confidently into industry networking opportunities.
