Today is GCSE Results Day

Many congratulations to our Year 11 students on their excellent GCSE results today! We are delighted with this year's results, with 31% achieving the very top grades of 9-8, 53% achieving between 9-7 and 71% between 9-6. These are a very strong set of GCSE results, particularly given that Ampleforth does not select students simply on academic ability but provides an all-round education which equips students for every aspect of life. We are proud of the range of academic ability here and stretch all our students to achieve their very best. These GCSE results are also evidence that our students have achieved considerably higher grades than predicted in their baseline data when they first arrived at Ampleforth. This achievement speaks to the hard work and dedication of our students - and their teachers. The results are promising for continued academic progress and achievement in the Sixth Form where we be joined by a large intake of new students from across the country.

“Our GCSE students should be very pleased with their results. This is the best set of top grades, both between 9-8 and 9-7, that we have achieved for a while. Even more impressive is how much higher our students have achieved than the standardised scoring system had predicted they would. This demonstrates that Ampleforth adds very significant academic value thanks to our outstanding teachers who adapt their style and techniques to suit each and every student in their classrooms. These results are a great foundation for our students in their Sixth Form courses and we look forward to seeing them continue to improve academically and contribute in all other areas of school life.”

We are immensely proud of Mia's journey at Ampleforth which has been one of quiet but remarkable achievement. Arriving in Year 11 from a different educational system to take GCSEs in only 1 year, and in English, a foreign language for Mia, she has met every academic challenge with steady determination. Her outstanding progress to achieve 4 As at A Level in Ancient History, Business Studies, German, and Biology, stand as testament to her resilience and commitment. We take particular pride in how fully she has embodied our values: working hard without fuss, forging strong friendships across her year group and beyond, actively contributing to her House and the College community, and showing understated diligence and quiet strength. We wish Mia every success as she plans ahead for university study in Europe; she has earned it entirely. Congratulations Mia!

Pippa has been an absolute joy to have at Ampleforth bright, hard-working, and determined, with an energy and warmth that light up every room she enters. A wonderful presence in both the College and St Margaret’s, she has thrown herself into life here with characteristic enthusiasm and given so much to those around her.

Her academic achievements are equally impressive, with two A*s in Biology and Business and a Distinction* in her Sport BTEC - the highest possible BTEC grade, and one recognised as equivalent to an A* at A Level for university entrance. Her success is a wonderful reflection of both her ability and her commitment and is a great example of how different approaches to learning and assessment can provide an equally rigorous route to academic success.

A talented sportswoman and accomplished equestrian, Pippa combines real ability with the joyful spirit that makes her so beloved by staff and pupils alike. She now goes on to study Zoology at Newcastle University.

Pippa, your energy, determination and sheer joy have been a gift to the community, and we have no doubt you will flourish in your studies and beyond. We wish you every success for the future.

We are delighted for Kester (13CT), who joined Ampleforth in Year 12 as one of our Wilcox Rugby Scholars and who achieved A, C and Distinction in Economics, Mathematics and BTEC Sport on results day. This is a well-deserved accolade following a challenging Year 13. Despite sustaining serious hand injuries that kept him from playing the rugby he is passionate about, Kester showed great resilience, continuing to dedicate time to rugby by coaching younger students while meeting the academic demands of his courses. In both his rugby and academic endeavours, he has demonstrated exceptional drive and focus, setting clear goals and working diligently to achieve them. His determination, perseverance and excellent time-management skills have been key to his success. It was therefore an easy decision to appoint him Head of his boarding house at the end of Year 12, where he excelled in motivating those around him through both action and example, fostering a positive and collaborative team environment. We warmly congratulate Kester on his results, which have secured him a place at Newcastle University to study Accounting and Finance, and wish him every success in his next steps.

A huge congratulations to Minnie (13M), who has achieved an outstanding set of A* results in Art & Design, Economics and Geography. These results will see her go on to read Geography at the University of Edinburgh.

Minnie has had four wonderful years at Ampleforth, and as Deputy Head of St Margaret’s House, she has become one of the most admired and respected students in both House and College.

Her work ethic is second to none, and she has shown remarkable talent and dedication across so many different areas, from the creative to the academic. Minnie has always set a high standard for herself and, in doing so, has been a wonderful example to those around her.

Whether leading and encouraging her fellow students during inter-house competitions, working hard in her studies, taking part in sport, or getting involved in the spiritual, social and wider life of the School, Minnie has always thrown herself into everything wholeheartedly. She does so with a rare combination of determination, humility and grace.

Minnie, your commitment, kindness and quiet excellence have made such an impression on everyone who has had the pleasure of knowing you. We are incredibly proud of all that you have achieved and have no doubt that you will thrive at Edinburgh and wherever life takes you next.

You will be very greatly missed in the Ampleforth Valley. We wish you every happiness and success for the future.

We are delighted that Noah (13H) has achieved A, A, B in Christian Theology, History, and Economics at A Level. This is testament to his hard work throughout the Sixth Form which he has balanced with a packed extra-curricular programme and an impressive sporting schedule, especially in Hockey. A talented athlete across the board, and capable of truly explosive bursts of speed, Noah has excelled as a charismatic Hockey Captain for Ampleforth 1st XI. His dedication to the sport and focus on development saw him be selected to represent Wales, in this summer’s EuroHockey U21 Championship II, where he scored in Wales’s 4-2 victory over Türkiye in Plzeň, Czechia.

A much-loved member of the Ampleforth community, Noah has also been an excellent Monitor for our Junior House, supporting younger pupils to find their feet at Ampleforth. We will miss his ready wit and humour and look forward to hearing about his future successes at Durham University, where he will read Theology, and beyond.

Many congratulations to twins Emily (13M) and Louisa (13M) on their outstanding A Level results. Both girls received 3 A*s in Christian Theology, History and Politics and a further A* in their EPQs (Extended Project Qualification). After taking gap years, Emily plans to go onto Durham University to read Theology and Religion and Louisa to University of Bath to read Politics and International Relations which includes a year’s study or professional placement abroad.

Emily combines intellectual ability with a willingness to work really hard, and the results speak for themselves. Her commitment to her studies has been wholehearted and consistent from the outset, and she has approached every academic challenge with both ambition and humility. Beyond the classroom, Emily has been a valued member of the CCF, throwing herself into its demands with the same seriousness of purpose she brings to everything she undertakes. On the hockey and cricket pitch she has been a committed and reliable member of the team. It is testament to the esteem in which Emily is held that she was chosen to serve as a Monitor for our Junior House. For younger girls navigating the early stages of boarding life, having a role model of Emily's calibre was an invaluable gift.

Louisa has been an outstanding member of St Margaret's and leaves behind a legacy the house will feel for years to come. Appointed as a Junior House Monitor, she has demonstrated a natural authority rooted in warmth, empathy, and great care for those around her. What has been especially impressive is her ability to hold the line on all fronts, even during the most demanding periods of the academic year. Where others might have allowed one commitment to slip in favour of another, Louisa never did. She remained dedicated to her studies whilst continuing to fulfil her responsibilities, setting an example that many aspired to follow. She has been an exceptional role model, with younger students looking to her for guidance and reassurance. On the sports field, Louisa has represented both school and house with distinction in cricket and hockey, bringing the same commitment and team spirit to her sport that she brings to every other aspect of house life.

Both girls leave behind a lasting impression on all who have had the pleasure of knowing and teaching them. They leave Ampleforth with our warmest wishes and great pride. Emily and Louisa are exactly the kind of young women this school hopes to send out into the world, and we have absolutely no doubt that they will flourish in all that lies ahead.

This year’s A Level and BTEC results were pleasing with 31% of our students achieving A*- A and 55% A*-B. Once the full data has been worked through, we know these results will show that a lot of academic value has been added during the students’ time at Ampleforth.

Around 80% of our students have got into their first choice of university at this point, although we expect this number to increase as some options are still being considered. The most popular choices are Durham, Exeter and Newcastle Universities and places have been accepted at St Andrews, Edinburgh, Imperial College, and Bristol amongst others. There has been more interest this year in studying overseas and a higher number are taking up offers from international universities including The Catholic University of America, De Pauw, and St Edwards in the USA; IE Madrid, University College Maastricht and University of Hong Kong. Some have been awarded athletic scholarships and are looking forward to developing their international standard of Golf, Rugby and Jui Jitsu.

Our focus on adaptive teaching is clearly working with academic students stretched to achieve straight A* and Distinction* grades and those who need more support enabled to flourish and reach their full potential. Rather than a hot house, our approach to learning means we have happy students living in a nurturing community and enjoying an education which develops the whole person, not just their academic achievements. I am delighted that so many will be going on to their first choice of university and am equally proud of those choosing to take gap years or pursue other paths. We know they will all go and make a positive difference in the world, sustained by the Compass for Life that Ampleforth has given them, and supported continually by our global community.”

County cricket comes to Ampleforth!

As part of our partnership with Yorkshire County Cricket Club, we're delighted to be hosting Yorkshire Women vs Surrey Women in the Metro Bank One Day Cup at Ampleforth College on Wednesday 26 August. This game marks the first ever competitive professional fixture hosted here at the College, and the first YCCC game played at a school. A fantastic opportunity to get close to the action and to watch top-class women's cricket in our stunning valley setting.

Food and refreshments will be available on site, as well as across the village.
