Three Ampleforth riders are heading to the NSEA National Championships!

Our equestrians have made a superb start to the term, with five riders qualifying for, and three attending, the NSEA (National Schools Equestrian Association) National Championships at Addington on 17 October.

A first for Ampleforth
Congratulations to Ettie (9A), who has been selected by the NSEA to represent Middle England in the Nations Cup. Ettie will be the fourth member of a team of four riders from different areas of the country, jumping the 1m class. Ampleforth has been represented at the Championships for many years, but this is the first time one of our riders has been chosen for a Nations Cup team.

Our other qualifiers

Nancy (9M): Jumping with Style, 80/85cm
Elsie (10M): Jumping with Style, 1m, and Show Jumping, 1m
Olivia (11M): Show Jumping, 90cm and 1m
Elizabeth (11M): Show Jumping, 90cm, and Combined Training, 90cm

We are very proud of Alice (13M) and Emily (13M) who have been shortlisted for the John Locke Institute Global Essay Prize, one of the world's most competitive essay competitions for young people.

This year the prize drew 100,227 entries from 183 countries. Essays are judged by senior academics from the world’s top universities (including Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, Princeton, and Stanford) and marked on original thinking, depth of knowledge, clarity of reasoning, and persuasive style.

Alice sought to answer the question: Is religious experience better explained by neuroscience or by theology? Emily tackled: Is space travel a necessity or an indulgence?

The girls are heading to the awards ceremony in London this week where the winners will be announced. Best of luck and well done to you both!

"It was nice to do something different from a normal school day and spend more time together."

Year 9 pupils came together as a whole year group last week for their annual retreat. This completed their initial period of induction into the Senior School with the focus on learning that making time to 'aim for the higher things' is a natural part of school life here.

Retreats are a chance to pause, reflect, and grow together as a year group. Rooted in our Benedictine tradition, and supported by House Chaplains, retreats sit at the heart of spiritual life here. They offer pupils and staff space for prayer, reflection, learning, and building stronger connections with each other. They deepen understanding of and participation in house and community life.

At the end of the retreat, each pupil is given a specially blessed Benedictine Medal: a sign of their full integration and welcome into our community.

Pupils reflected:

"We had a lot of fun and learned a lot. It was an incredible experience."

"I loved being with my friends and having a day where we could really enjoy all the things that school had to offer"

"It was a good opportunity to get to know our year better and spend a good time together."

Open Day was full last Saturday with no spare seats to hear our students talk about life at Ampleforth. Our busiest Open Day in over 7 years follows a rise in pupil numbers into the main entry points, Year 9 and Year 12, this September, a very positive sign of a thriving school. We continue to appeal to families from all over the UK and Europe; families who are looking for a broad, values-based education rooted in character, leadership, and service, where children are given independence, responsibility, and encouragement to pursue their own interests.

Thank you to all those who came, our excellent student tour guides and speakers, and to the wonderful pipe band.

We are pleased to welcome Mrs Tori Fletcher back to Ampleforth College as the new Head of Psychology. Tori studied Physiology, Sports Science and Nutrition at the University of Glasgow before completing a degree in Dietetics at Glasgow Caledonian University. After working as a Dietitian, she gained her PGCE at the University of York, completing her teaching placement at Ampleforth where she taught Biology and supported Duke of Edinburgh expeditions. Since then, Tori has taught across a range of schools in North Yorkshire, covering the sciences, Psychology and vocational subjects. Outside school, she enjoys long-distance walking, skiing, and exploring the Yorkshire Moors with her dog, Nutella. We wish you all the best here Tori.

Staff Introduction - Mr Jonathan Waldburger

Welcome to Mr Jonathan Waldburger, new Housemaster of St Cuthbert’s and St Thomas’, teacher of History and English and a passionate sports coach. Jonathan joins us from Kearsney College in Durban, South Africa, where he spent 12 years as a boarding master, including five as Housemaster. He is committed to creating a real home where boys can thrive.
Jonathan is joined by his wife, Kate, and their four children. As a family, they are delighted to have joined the Ampleforth community and are settling in well. We hope they will be very happy here.
