York Medical Society

York Medical Society This page is for members to communicate about what is happening at the Medical Society. York medical An oak paneled room serves as a refectory.

York Medical Society was founded in 1832 for "The purpose of promoting and diffusing medical knowledge". Over the many years since, many distinguished Doctors and Surgeons have been members and given lectures to the Society. Each year a new President is elected who is responsible for the Programme of Meetings, both of a medical/scientific and latterly of more artistic nature together with a busy social calendar. The Society distributes monies to chosen charities every year. The society also fosters close links with the Hull York Medical School. The Society owns its own rooms within a beautiful Grade II listed building in the heart of the City of York. The priceless medical library has been moved and housed with The University of York for safe keeping. Membership is in the region of 350 medically qualified personnel both in Hospital and General Practice. Retired professionals actively maintain contact with the Society. Both old and new members are cordially invited to our regular Friday evening meetings which are preceded by a reception in the library

Within 23 Stonegate and the York Medical Society's Rooms there is a large lecture theatre seating up to 60 people with modern projection facilities, a library and a dining room.

The Evening of Summer Delights event raised c£600 for The Millie Wright Children’s Charity through generous donations from attendees.

Noteworthy performed a selection of pieces ranging from Bruce Springsteen's Dancing in the Dark, to the more relaxing Eva Cassidy's Songbird before premiering their contest pieces for this year.

Ceri and Nigel Wright gave a short presentation introducing The Millie Wright Children's Charity. This charity provides family support to parents and family members caring for children with life-threatening conditions. This support can be a combination of practical, financial and emotional. The charity funds a Family Support Worker at Leeds Children's Hospital and leads a 'feed the parents' initiative, enabling the parents of long-stay patients access to food at the hospital. Also featured as a family support 'hardship' grant and the provision of essentials such as toiletries, clothing or other items that help parents going through extremely difficult times.

Donations can be made to the charity by going to their website https://www.millieschildrenscharity.org/

On the final night of the York Community Choir Festival, in front of a full theatre, compere for the evening and YMS President, Paul Blenkiron together with performer and YMS Manager, Susan Blenkiron, presented a cheque for £2,200 to Theatre Manager Dan Shrimpton.

This was as a result of fundraising work by members during Paul’s presidential year for our Society’s chosen local charity, plus a donation from charitable funds. The Joseph Rowntree Theatre holds a special place in Paul’s heart. He has performed there for many years and he is a keen advocate for its good work and the wider health benefits it brings. The Theatre, built in 1935 for the workers of Rowntree Factory, is now run by volunteers. It is fundraising to improve its access and disabled facilities. This will allow it to continue hosting projects like the Annual Community Choir Festival which gives local groups the opportunity to perform on a professional stage. This year performers included many adult and children’s choirs, several wellbeing choirs and the Leveson Choir, launched by York Against Cancer in 2023 for those in York touched by cancer.

If you wish to help the Theatre continue its great work, like York Medical Society, then you can ‘Buy a Brick’. Details can be found on the Theatre website: https://www.josephrowntreetheatre.co.uk/support-us/

Dr Google - Our Future Health: Smart Hospitals Know Where Stuff Is

In a critical healthcare environment, seconds save lives. Yet, hospitals often struggle with a surprisingly basic question: Where exactly are our staff, our patients, and our life-saving equipment? While GPS revolutionized outdoor navigation, the indoor environment has remained a blind spot. Until now…

In this cutting edge talk from one of the world’s great innovators, Roy takes us on a personal journey from Cambridge University to Silicon Valley. He describes his progression from senior research engineer at Olivetti, Intel, and Xerox PARC, to Principal Scientist for the Android group at Google.

Focussing on health settings, Roy reveals how we are overcoming the challenges of indoor positioning. He explains his breakthrough work - using Ultra-wideband (UWB) technology plus Next-Gen WiFi - and how they can be combined with pinpoint precision to create a truly "smart" hospital.

Dr Want holds over 100 patents in mobile computing (Wikipedia). He received the ACM SIGMOBILE Outstanding Contributions Award in 2019, and continues to set global standards for the future of Wi-Fi.

Join us for drinks from 7pm.
Meeting starts at 7.30pm followed by supper if booked.

Two course meal with w**e – £25 per head - please book your supper before Wednesday 22 April 2026.

This meeting will be face to face in the York Medical Society rooms and also shared via Zoom.
