Do you remember getting your first email address? Fiona, a 1990s graduate, told us her memories of using the internet as a student, back when it still felt very new!

"I remember being really excited when we were given our very first email address! Obviously, it only worked internally, within the University."

"After a few drinks in Derwent bar, we would often go up to Derwent's computer room and email each other...it was such a novelty!"

Check out these pictures of computer rooms from campus past👇

Things we miss about spring on campus:

- Catching up with friends after a lecture
- Reading a book somewhere next to the lake
- Going to feed the ducks

They went from nights out with Spanish Society in York, to getting married years later in 2017...

This is the story of Katie and Craig, who met because they both studied Spanish at York:

"It was the very first year York offered Spanish as a degree course in 2008, so the classes were tiny.

"I still remember walking into one seminar with only seven other students - and Craig says that’s the moment he noticed me." shared Katie

Not too long after sharing society-socials together, the pair became inseparable. They even spent a year studying abroad together in Spain 💛

Katie and Craig got married in 2022, and as a tribute to where it all began they named tables at their wedding after York colleges 🥹

We are so proud that over an incredible £25,000 has been raised to support mental health research in this year's Great York Walk!

A massive thank you to our walkers, and to everyone who donated to help us get there. It's been amazing to watch our community come together and we cannot wait for next year's walk 🥹

At 88, Sidney Ross became the oldest person to graduate in York's history ❤️

Then, he went on to get a degree from Buckingham afterwards! Now at 93, he is England’s oldest practising barrister 👏

"It was not simply a degree earned late in life; it was the expression of a lifelong belief that learning is never finished.”

We can't cheer him on enough! You can read our full interview with Sidney over on our blog: https://bit.ly/3QZyFRU

Who remembers the Blackwell's bookshop on campus? 👀
There was a period of time during the 90s where you could stop by this cosy shop and pick up your favourite reads...

...And they've done it! Two University staff members have walked an incredible 125 miles to raise money for community learning centres across the North👏

Staff members Mary and Elke set off from Grimsby last Monday, walking the distance between learning centres in Hull, Bridlington, then finishing in York on Friday 😮

The pair wanted to shine a light on educational inequality in the Yorkshire region, where it's estimated that children facing disadvantage start school roughly five months behind their peers.

The community learning centres across the region provide life-changing educational support, and the money they've raised so far is already enough to support four children through their journeys 💛

“Crossing the finish line in York was powerful, but it’s not the end... The real work carries on long after our feet have had a rest." said Elke
