Snooker involves maths...and maths involves snooker!

Earlier today, I had the honour of chatting on the 'Talking Snooker Podcast' with Phil Haigh & Nick Metcalfe in York during the UK Snooker Championship.

It's been a hectic start to the term here at mastrellimaths.
Great to see familiar faces again and meet some new ones too!

An article by 'Maths Horizons' from May 2025 has some very interesting reform ideas in response to the age of AI which I will explore on here over the coming months.

For now though, this quote made me feel passionately in favour of the importance of a 'secure base' of knowledge. Slow and deep learning is effective and something we feel proud of doing with our students wherever possible.

The upshot to this approach is that it helps to set up pupils for maths-world 'ready' moments such as negotiating skills, investment choices or solving a puzzle...and so much more!

Great to be supporting and sponsoring the U14 Wigginton Grasshoppers girls team for the second season running. What a start to the season, girls!

The U14 girls took to the field at Mill Lane for the first time in 25/26 yesterday morning to take on Scarborough, and the team hit double figures for a second consecutive week in an 11-1 victory. Whilst there was no mercy for the humble report writer's fingers and memory, nor was there for the opposition as the team were superb and put on a wonderful display of attacking football. Ahead in just the first minute, the girls put immense pressure on Scarborough with powerful, direct running with and without the ball mixed with intelligent use of the football. That willingness to work, to run and to look after the ball only gets a team so far however and it is so important a team takes their chances when so dominant - the girls did that and more. Throughout, the standard of finishing was outstanding with several of the 11 goals from range and others showing speed, strength and stamina to run through on goal and finish confidently one on one. The defence were reliable as ever and stayed switched on, laying the platform for what happened in front of them with accurate distribution. It can be easy to ease off the gas when comfortably ahead but the most impressive element of the team's performance was that they stayed hungry for goals, hungry to create chances and kept each other going with positive communication and encouragement. Apologies for the lack of individual mentions in this write up, we were keen to try and highlight the performance of everyone in what was a fantastic and perfect team performance.
