"Disrupt," is a new peer-reviewed international journal launched by the International Humanitarian Affairs team at the University of York. Through this publication, we aim to challenge conventional thinking and practices in the fields of humanitarian aid, sustainable development, and climate change. The name "Disrupt" encapsulates the journal's core mission: to shake up the status quo and foster innovative approaches to global challenges. Disrupt seeks to catalyze transformative change in how we address complex humanitarian and environmental issues by providing a platform for cutting-edge research, novel ideas, and critical analyses. The journal will feature a wide range of topics, encouraging interdisciplinary perspectives that bridge the gaps between academic research, policy-making, and on-the-ground implementation.

 

In line with its commitment to inclusivity and diversity of expression, Disrupt warmly welcomes contributions that extend beyond traditional academic articles. The journal recognizes that insights and inspirations can take many forms, and thus encourages submissions of creative pieces that illuminate humanitarian and environmental themes in unique ways. This includes, but is not limited to, poetry that captures the human experience in crises, photographic works that document the impacts of climate change or the resilience of communities, and artwork that visualizes complex data or concepts related to sustainable development. By embracing these diverse forms of expression alongside rigorous research, Disrupt aims to create a rich, multifaceted dialogue that engages a broad audience and inspires innovative thinking across disciplines. This inclusive approach reflects the journal's belief that addressing global challenges requires not only scientific analysis but also emotional understanding and creative problem-solving.

Theory Building in action!

The MIHA team have been working on highlighting the true price of Europe and the US sustainability agenda that is plundering the natural resources of the Global South. The climate crisis continues to be a major focus of our work within humanitarianism.

As wars continue to unfold between one another and the planet, modern society hauls closer to a precipice of human and planetary degradation. The old colonial and dominant neoliberal agendas are failed experiments incapable of fostering human flourishing for all. The re-imagining of alternative futures has been hijacked by a paternalistic approach to empowerment. The creativity of our existence lies in an uncolonized mind. This research article repositions empowerment and compassion at the forefront of the sustainable and development discourse. The ethnographies of women from marginalized and crisis-affected communities in this study reveal that they are already empowered. Therefore, through an empowerment paradigm, the realization of inner development surges to address the disablement of communities and the expansion of alternative approaches to modern-day challenges.
