A new student started with me last week. I have just finished tutoring for the day and checked my inbox to find this email from his parent:

I just wanted to say a very big thank you for [student's name] lesson this evening. He was buzzing when he got off the call and very eager to share his writing with us!

He had been nervous before the lesson but was delighted after the lesson!

Writing skills 1 - choosing the right vocabulary

The choice of vocabulary is crucial in writing because it determines how effectively you engage your readers and maintain their interest. Words have the power to captivate attention, and using precise, detailed, and sensory language can encourage readers to stay immersed in your text. Clear vocabulary is essential for ensuring your ideas are easily understood, making your writing accessible and engaging.

Crafting a text with carefully selected words that suit the purpose and style of your writing helps create a stronger connection with your audience. A limited vocabulary, however, can restrict your ability to fully express your ideas, leading to missed opportunities for impact.

To overcome this, it’s important to actively expand your vocabulary. Reading widely, exploring new phrases, and analysing effective writing can help you build a rich repertoire of words. By doing so, you can elevate your writing and communicate with greater precision, creativity, and power.

I loved English at school. I love books and stories, writing and words. A degree in English was the natural route for me and look where it has brought me to. I believe that everyone has the potential to blossom in English, and with the right direction and support, I can help you to reach your goals.

I have an English degree, an English PGCE and a CELTA (TEFL) qualification. I have taught English as a foreign language in Japan, Italy and Czech Republic and have spent the last 15 years teaching in the state school system in the UK.

I can help with KS3 English, GCSE English Literature and English Language, A Level English Literature, and EFL/ESL. I also have experience of working with students with additional needs, including dyslexia, ASD, ADHD and SEMH.

My sessions are mostly online, but can be in-person if you are in the York area.
