After the shocking news from London that no parent should ever have to hear. A nursery worker has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for sexually abusing very young children in his care over many years a betrayal of trust that has left families devastated.

This tragedy reminds us that children’s safety must always come first. Nurseries and early-years settings should urgently review and strengthen safeguarding to prevent anything like this happening again, including:

Robust safeguarding policies that are known and understood by every member of staff.

Clear procedures for raising and reporting any concerns about staff behaviour, with no delay or hesitation.

Whistleblowing channels where colleagues feel safe to speak up if they see anything worrying.

Regular training and refreshers on spotting signs of abuse and how to respond.

Designated safeguarding leads with up-to-date training who take swift action on referrals.

And continued cooperation with statutory agencies such as police and local authority child-protection teams.

Every child deserves to be safe, secure and protected and we must all work together to make that a reality.

As a nursery owner of multiple settings, safeguarding will always be our top priority.

We have made the decision to say NO to electronic devices in sleep rooms or during lone working, and our safeguarding policy has been updated to reflect this across all sites.

This is about:

Keeping children safe

Reducing distraction in high-risk areas

Protecting our staff

Strengthening our safeguarding culture

Clear boundaries create safer environments for everyone.
Safeguarding is not optional it is our responsibility.
