ABOUT THE PHOENIX VOICES

Founded in 2014, The Phoenix Voices is passionately committed to affordable and accessible music-making throughout the Yeovil community and beyond! Whether that's the thrill of learning new music in the rehearsal room, showing even the least confident or inexperienced singers the secrets of unlocking their musicianship or making a difference out in the community we love w

hat we do! We're a zero-pressure choir, with no auditions (except for solo opportunities), no minimum rehearsal policies and no mandatory events - even our concerts are optional! When we do perform though, we have a live session orchestra band to accompany us at every main event, carefully crafting the ultimate choral experience both for our members and our audiences! We meet at Holy Trinity Church and Community Centre on Lysander Road, Yeovil on a Tuesday evening, 7:30-9pm, which is also our home base for concerts...but we also love performing on the Octagon stage, combatting social isolation in care homes by delivering accessible singing workshops there and flash mobbing local supermarkets and the town centre; not withstanding the occasional wedding, funeral, school fete or party. Contact us for more information, to find out where we’ll be performing next or what you can do to get involved. We accept every person who comes through the door, no matter what your level of experience - whether you've done three tours with the LSC, sing spectacularly or claim not to! The first rehearsal is free, then £5 thereafter on a pay-as-you-go basis, with discounts offered for bulk payments, families and friends and concession rates for anyone on low income or receiving benefits. Last night was the final night of our 2026 Find Your Voice course, and didn't those 6 weeks just fly by?

It was an absolute pleasure welcoming some new singers alongside our Phoenix regulars, and we hope you all had as much fun as we did and that we'll be permanently welcoming you to our Phoenix Family! 💕

Closing our second half was this Elton John classic, requested by more than one choir member! I'm Still Standing is often seen as a message of Elton's resilience over the years; however, lyricist Bernie Taupin wrote it with a particular person in mind.

He later said: "It's perhaps one more example of the original idea being interpreted by everyone into something quite different. I think people see it as an anthem based on Elton's strong sense of survival in the face of adversity. Which, believe me, is perfectly fine by me.

"In fact, it's probably infinitely more interesting, perhaps, than what it was initially written about. Which, if my memory serves me correctly, it was a sort of kiss off to an old girlfriend. You know the sort of thing, 'Don't you worry about me, I'll be perfectly fine.' Unlike George Jones' 'She Thinks I Still Care,' where, in fact, he really did, I really didn't."

The song is directed at a former lover, with Elton singing about how he is still standing strong without them.

Sung by Laura House Suddenly Seymour is a song written for the 1982 stage musical Little Shop of Horrors and included in the 1986 film adaptation, sung by Rick Moranis and Ellen Greene. A duet sung by the characters Seymour and Audrey the song takes place in act two of the musical after the death of Orin Scrivello, where Seymour comforts guilt-ridden Audrey and the two finally reveal their feelings for each other.

Phoenix stalwart Liv takes to the stage with her take on the 1983 What a Feeling from Flashdance!

"Flashdance...What a Feeling" is heard over the opening credits of the film as a young woman rides her bike through the streets of Pittsburgh just after sunrise and then continues as work goes on in a steel mill. The mill workers use machinery that represents the "world made of steel, made of stone" that Cara sings about, and as the chorus is heard for the last time to finish presenting the opening credits, the worker that the film keeps cutting back to is wearing a welding helmet with Alex printed on the front. The welder removes the protective gear to reveal that Alex is female, and she shakes her hair loose from the helmet and catches her breath. With the film's unveiling of its main character, producer John Trenz wrote, "The gender revelation seems to punctuate the song's lyrics, 'What a feeling! Being’s believing, I can have it all.'"

On June 25, 2009, the demise of the King of Pop took centre stage days before he was to make his comeback act. When the news broke out, the world focused on the life and songs of Michael Jackson.

Man in the Mirror was released in the “Bad” album in 1988 and has a timeless message. The message is simply that if you want to change the world, you have to start with yourself. The song urges us not to just look from afar and complain and lament, but to change who we are. All change begins with us. All change begins inside of us. All change starts with self-awareness.

Taking to the stage next with the band was our fabulous Chair Gail Beaver who channelled her inner Whitney!

When Whitney Houston came on the scene, we'd never seen the likes of her before,” says producer Narada Michael Walden. "So many elements came together so effortlessly. It was like she had been passed down the torch from her mother Cissy, godmother Darlene Love, aunt Aretha Franklin and cousin Dionne Warwick, and she was now the new champion who could go beyond all of them. She had the voice, the looks, the whole package, so it was hard to say no to her. Whatever she wanted, she got, brother. She was a hot motor scooter and she knew it.” Somewhere along the line, we reckon Gail got passed the torch, too!
