Best wishes to all those undertaking the GCSE English: Paper 1 exam.

Just to recap:

1) Four quotes from a selected passage.
2) Language features. Focus on reader response rather than 'feature spotting'.
2 Paragraphs.
3) Structural features. How is the text structured and why? Focuses, zooms and shifts. Don't retell the plot.
2/3 Paragraphs.
Never write 'makes the reader want to read on'.
4) To what extent...
Student statement. Focus on key words in statement.
Evaluate.
Refer to methods/quotes/ analysis.
4 Paragraphs.

5) Describe/Narrate.
Plan beforehand.
Different length of paragraphs/ sentence structure.
Wide range of punctuation.
Sophisticated vocabulary.
Use language and structural techniques.
Write a punctuation map in your margin- tick off as you go.

You must not narrate a descriptive task.
You must add description to a narrative task.

I'm often asked how to access Shakespeare as the language can be off-putting.

My tips:

1) First and foremost: get to grips with the plot. Watch a version of the play; focus on the action and the interaction between the characters. Even if you watch the film, ensure you understand it's a play written to be performed.

2) Use a text which offers a page synopsis and translation of the more archaic terms.

3) Understand that Shakespeare often uses figurative language. Read around the metaphors.

4) Consider why Shakespeare uses prose between some characters, blank and rhymed verse. Often the choice of form reflects the interaction/meaning between characters.

5) As with all literature, the characters are constructs designed to act as a purpose. Work out what their purpose is. Ensure you don't treat them as real people.

6) Consider Shakespeare's intention. Ask questions on why he has chosen to explore the character's psyche through the use of soliloquy etc? What is the purpose of this?

7) Ask for help. Don't be put off by the language, the more you work at it, the easier it gets.

8) Think about the setting. Why does Shakespeare set his plays in different cultures/ countries? Consider the context.

9) When responding to Shakespeare, think about how he creates humanistic portraits of flawed characters. What is nature? What is nurture?

10) Do not make sweeping statements regarding context.

Currently the role is unregulated, so there are many offers of tuition by those lacking in both experience and qualifications. Tutors should be able to provide certification outlining both a degree level qualification and professional certificate in education. Moreover, we can also provide details of both experience and a DBS.

You are perfectly entitled to request these documents and meet with the tutor before you commit to any kind of tuition.

Lots of new people liking and following the page recently, thought I would introduce myself again and what I believe in:

- I’ve worked in education for over 10 years, working in SEN as well as maths. My joy is helping others and changing mindsets within learning.
- I believe that with the right support and guidance, every learner can achieve, I’m always happy to talk to anyone about what will help their child succeed.
- I love going on holiday, taking me and my partner to new and exciting places, recently we’ve been to the Dominican Republic for what I can only describe as paradise!
- Building working relationships and gaining trust with young people is the foundation that will inspire their confidence, and in turn help them achieve in their schooling.

I’d love to hear from previous tutees how they are doing now, and where they have gone to now! Especially as I embark on this journey full time!
