HTA responds to the announcement of more drought declarations across the UK

Following the Horticultural Trades Association’s (HTA) participation in the National Drought Group and in response to the announcement of wider drought declarations across the UK, Fran Barnes, Chief Executive of the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA), commented:

“With almost three-quarters of England in “flash drought”, and all of Wales now officially in drought, numerous water restrictions and Temporary Use Bans (TUBS) across the UK, and data showing that last month was officially the driest July on record, the pressure on our water resources couldn’t be clearer.

“The solution to the UK's water challenges lies not just in the amount of rainfall, but in how effectively we capture, store, and manage it. Today we reiterated the need for the UK to take action and implement a long-term water resilience strategy that addresses the realities of a changing climate.

Autumn planting ensures strong establishment during the winter season, as the soil is warm from the summer sunshine. The roots start growing into the surrounding soil, which start to anchor the plant into the soil and absorb moisture & nutrients from the soil.

When spring arrives, the plants are able grow away strongly with reduced establishment care compared to those planted in March/April.

The best climate resilient plants: 12 exceptionally beautiful plants that will deal with the changing weather conditions in the UK

Exceptionally long hot summers are fast becoming the ‘new normal’ in the UK, according to the Met Office. Temperatures broke records in June and 2025 was the warmest year since records began. Meanwhile, on the other side of the seasons, our last decade of winters have been increasingly wetter and our springs are becoming warmer and drier overall.

With this in mind, gardeners across the country are faced with the reality that many of the plants that have thrived in UK gardens are now struggling. In order to create a garden you can enjoy all year round - and that can continue to support vital pollinators - you need to make your garden more climate resilient. To avoid using gallons of water on your plot one of the key things you can do is grow plants that don’t rely on you for constant care and attention. It’s not just about drought tolerant garden ideas - we also need plants that will tolerate unpredictable winters: winters that often see deluges of water and flash floods.

Lemonading is the positivity-focused trend taking over gardens this summer – it’s perfect for creating resilient gardens that look good all year round

When life gives you lemons, you make lemonade. You know the saying. But you may not have heard of lemonading, an emerging garden trend that focuses on making your garden’s imperfections work in your favour - and following this summer’s relentless heatwaves, now is the perfect time to get started.

One thing that’s abundantly clear from this year’s garden trends is that resilient, hardy gardens are everyone’s goal in 2026. We want plants that withstand heatwaves and landscaping ideas that can go toe to toe with flood risk, and it needs to look good while doing so.

Interestingly, the lemonading approach is one of the best ways to achieve a resilient garden. By embracing your garden’s flaws, rather than trying to ‘fix’ them, you can build an outdoor space that can withstand the elements and look good all year round.
