What do you see when a child is at play? Running, building, creating, pretending—these are the moments that catch our eye. But just beneath the surface, something much deeper is happening.

Play is where children develop adaptability, confidence, and problem-solving skills. It’s where they learn to navigate risk, build friendships, and trust their own ideas. It’s where their brains and bodies work together, shaping the skills they’ll carry for life.

The next time you watch a child play, remember—what’s visible is just the tip of the iceberg. There is so much happening underneath!

A stick is just a stick...right?

"There is nothing to do outside!"

This is a common complaint of children that don't have a lot of practice playing outdoors. They go outside and see rocks, sticks, and leaves with little idea on what to do with them...or what we call "affordances."

Children just need TIME. Time to get bored and start experimenting with these objects.

Let's say you send that same child back outdoors again. They sit in the dirt. They eventually pick up a nearby stick. They start to write in the dirt with it. Now they have ONE affordance on how to use that object in play. Then they dig in the dirt with it and now have TWO affordances on how to use the stick. Next, they see another child not far from them, pick up a stick to build a fort. Now they have THREE play affordances.

The more practice children get playing with sticks and watching other children use them in various ways, the more affordances & ideas they will get on how to play in new & creative ways.

Let your children play with sticks! Let them get bored!

Over time, they will be better equipped to come up with their own ideas and dive deeper into more complex play schemes.
