🔶 It’s not that they WON’T, it’s that they CAN’T🔶

Frequently, parents, teachers and supporting professionals ask us for strategies and training around children who are ‘refusing to comply’ or ‘being defiant’.

At the Centre of Excellence in Child Trauma, we think it’s really important to understand the difference between ‘won’t and ‘can’t’.

A penguin has wings, but it cannot fly. You could take a penguin to the top of a cliff and decide that it ‘should’ indeed be able to fly as it has wings. You might  throw the penguin off the cliff, shouting at it to try harder, to flap its wings a bit more.

The penguin would REALLY like to fly- to save itself from crashing to the ground.

Our children would REALLY like to be able to do the things we expect of them. The simple fact is that when we are raising children who have experienced trauma, (or neuro-diverse children), they are simply unable to meet OUR unrealistic expectations.

Instead of using standard parenting techniques to teach our ‘birds’ to fly, we have to teach our ‘penguins’ to swim.

There is no reason why our children cannot grow, succeed, and thrive. But first, we have to change OUR unreasonable expectations.
