Red School - Restoring the power of the menstrual cycle and menopause

We offer a new paradigm in women's development that is central to girls' and women's health, psycho-spiritual growth and women's leadership. Our radical new approach is based on the inner knowledge of the menstrual cycle and the developmental journey from menarche to menopause and beyond.

19/03/2026

We're starting an online, guided journey through the inner seasons of the menstrual cycle soon - would you like to join us?

It's called Cycle Power and we'll be together for six weeks, as a global community of people who want to live cyclically and embody the wisdom of the cycle.

Together, we'll explore how to:

❄️ Inner winter: Yield to the call of surrender during inner winter (menstruation) so that you can heal burnout, receive the Mother Hug and experience rested power.

🌸 Inner spring: Move tenderly with inner spring (pre-ovulation) and come to relish your pace, your uniqueness and the playfulness and possibility this awakens within you.

🌻 Inner summer Allow yourself to be unashamedly YOU. Unleash your full expression in inner summer (ovulation) and experience the great pleasure of sharing your gifts in the world.

🍁 Inner autumn: Slow down and hold yourself through the fire of inner autumn (premenstruum) so that you can tap into intuitive knowing, claim your authority and stand for what truly matters to you.

We start in April and you can see the link in our bio to find out more, and to register for our free upcoming workshop: awaken your cycle power on April 1st.

I loved every second of this conversation with the brilliant Dr. Cre Dye - - who brings her magic the Menstruality Justice and Inclusion Educator at Red School.

Cre has served her local, national, and international communities with heart, mind and body activism for over twenty-five years as a mental health therapist, yoga teacher/trainer and university professor.

Together we practiced deep listening to a now-famous speech from one of the most powerful voices of love in our world today, the Sikh activist and lawyer Valarie Kaur.

In the speech Valarie asks: what if this darkness isn’t the darkness of the tomb, but the darkness of the womb?

In the emergent and far-reaching conversation that followed, we explored:

🔥 What it means to sit within the generative darkness of the womb and how Valarie’s birthing and labour analogies and how they can guide us in dark times

🔥 What we can learn from Black feminists like Toni Morrison, bell hooks and Audre Lourde about how to cultivate resilience in times of crisis (and how white women have a particular role to play in meeting the challenges in our world.)

🔥 ...and how the different phases - especially the premenstrual phase - of the menstrual cycle can grow our capacity to be with discomfort.

Thank you Cre for all your wisdom!

My personal favourite moment was when you guided us all to use our imagination to romanticise our lives, so that we can keep stepping back into action with renewed energy and vision.

In the premenstrual phase of the cycle, many find they’re very creative at this time.

You can be a pure channel, calling down inspiration, insight and knowing that seeks to be born into the world.

You can be a midwife for the unspoken and unmanifest.

The power here is one of deep embodiment, using the aliveness of your own presence to sense and feel what’s beyond everyday awareness; to be a
tuning fork for the subtle forces that shape the material world.

To ‘see’ the energetic precursors and past patterning that underpin everything.

These powers, often feared and misunderstood, can put you in contact with the spirit of elemental life and the healing force of the natural world.

We'd love to hear your experiences with this - please share in the comments.

Historically, trauma research has been done primarily on men, and then applied to women’s bodies as if it’s going to work in the same way.

But as our latest Menstruality podcast guest, Somatic Emotional Processing facilitator Veronica Rottman, shares, women currently suffer from twice the rate of anxiety and depression, make up 80% of the population with autoimmune disease and are much more likely to experience burnout.

Veronica - - is the founder of Soma School and has devoted over 40,000 hours over the past seventeen years to trauma resolution.

In our conversation today she explores the female nervous systems, including;

🌿 how women and those socialised as female experience trauma differently inside a patriarchal culture

🌿 why the female nervous system is more prone to the freeze response

🌿 why the somatics and wellness worlds need to be less focused on regulation for women, and more about being with and softening into what’s happening in our cyclical bodies.

Veronica also shares her own journey from complex post-traumatic stress and in her earlier life, she experienced PMDD, menstrual pain and other symptoms, which she describes as her body revolting against the patriarchy.

After practicing menstrual cycle awareness for many years, she now no longer has pelvic pain and in our chat she shares how the practice has helped her to have a more embodied relationship to her pelvis, and to understand her cycle through sensations.

Thank you so much Veronica!

It’s crucial now that we all come together to serve the planet in our own unique ways.

We believe that your 'menstruality' is a deeply internal process that can take you into the most intimate places in yourself, and within that reveals the World, the Whole, and our role in serving it.

Your cycle is coded with our particular gifts, and menopause is the ultimate moment of bringing us into alignment with yourself and these gifts so that you may be a potent and effective agent of change.

Let’s reclaim our menstruality as our path to power and leadership!

Leave a 🔥 in the comment thread if you're with us.

We have a lively, intelligent and compassionate community at Red School who are actively participating in making real this new story.

Join us for camaraderie and support and to participate in the conversation that’s turning the tide.

The crossover days are the moments in the menstrual cycle when you move from one phase or inner season to the next.

Some of us notice them more acutely because we ‘stumble’ or are disrupted in quite distinct, and occasionally intense, ways.

They are:

❄️ inner winter to spring: Menstrual to preovulatory phase (approx day 5/6)

🌿 inner spring to summer: Preovulatory to ovulatory phase (approx day 11/12)

☀️ inner summer to autumn: Ovulatory to premenstrual phase (approx day 19/20)

🍁 inner autumn to winter: Premenstrual to menstrual phase (approx day 27/28)

(As always, work with the Big Red Rule here - your crossover days may happen at different times for you - trust your direct experience).

The crossover days are void moments.

They potentially expose you to emptiness, a subtle sensation of the metaphorical ground giving way under you, which can create an emotional wobble or unease. Mostly this won’t be strong – a mere blip on the screen, but sometimes it can be very disruptive…

In our recent Menstruality podcast episode 148 we explored many ways to work with your crossover days, including slowing down, so that you can lean into the challenges they bring.

Whether you feel rocked as you enter the premenstruum, vulnerable as your period completes, or submerged in a dark space just before your bleed, we invite you to lean into the challenge.

Do what you can to meet the moment of ‘falling into the hole’ with presence. Slow right down, step away from the world and gift yourself a few moments of sweet time with yourself, to feel and be with this moment.

You’re not trying to change anything, you’re just expanding your awareness of the moment of tension, and bringing your loving attention to it (and yourself).

Is there a particular crossover day that always feels bumpy for you? Please share your stories in the comment thread below...

Yes!

Thanks to Veronica from both for sharing this powerful post, and for the incredible wisdom she shared in her Menstruality podcast episode which went live today - episode 228: The Menstrual Cycle and the Female Nervous System.

Veronica is the founder of Soma School and has devoted over 40,000 hours over the past seventeen years to trauma resolution. In the conversation today she explores the female nervous system including;

🌀 How women and those socialised as female experience trauma differently inside a patriarchal culture

🌀 Why somatics and wellness need to be less focused on regulation for women, and more about being with and softening into what’s happening in our bodies, and acknowledging that we fluctuate more consistently, due to our third biological, rhythm - the infradian rhythm.

🌀 The role of oxytocin in the trauma response, why women experience trauma relationally, and the importance of cuddle puddles.

.. and so much more.

Many in this community working with menstrual problems, and for some of you, they are quite extreme. If you feel a little bleak and hopeless as your approach the practice of menstrual cycle awareness, that makes sense.

But we invite you to take heart – menstrual cycle awareness offers a vital remedy that, combined with other natural health approaches, have helped many to transform their menstrual experience.

We believe that our menstrual suffering has its roots in cultural denial of the cycle. Over centuries, consistently denying, interrupting and overriding this menstrual knowledge has caused a subtle insult to the integrity of our being. It continues today, and will do so as long as we deny the cycle’s reality.

Ignoring the cycle puts a strain on our being – psychologically and physically. It’s as though we all suffer from low-grade stress in our systems because we continually have to override something.

Begin to restore the power of the cycle, however modestly, and over time you reshape your experience of yourself; you soothe your whole system, release this subtle ‘trauma’ and ease your symptoms.

For some the effect is immediate, for others it’s a slower process and needs to be
combined with other self-care practices. And for others still, the answers are more complex and may require considerable input from the many health modalities available today.

Regardless of the level of your suffering, with the restoration of awareness of the cycle’s power comes meaning. A glimmer of empowerment can stir within the powerlessness you may feel.
