Every year I think to myself, maybe I’ll do a little ‘meet the mushroom’ series 🍄 with a video on each mushroom I find through the season because every single one has such DAZZLING CHARACTER! ✨
Well, I say that, there are also the little brown jobbies 😂 we won’t bother with those! But then I worry it’s too boring? What do you reckon? Would you enjoy a mushroom series, or are you only interested in the edible ones? 🍴
Anyway, here are some of the amazing mushrooms I found today! It’s safe to say the season has well and truly started! ✨ If you’d like to take yourself off on a magical mushroom adventure, here are some tips for you:
🌳 Find the forest! Ideally, head to some ancient woodland, with lots of moss and a good diversity of trees! I find a combination of oak, pine and beech consistently offers lots of treasure!
🌧️ Keep an eye on the weather! I would recommend heading out around 3-5 days after some very heavy rain. Main mushroom season is September - November in the UK
🔎 Look around! Don’t just look on the forest floor. Check fallen logs, dead branches and even the trunks of living trees
📸 Take photos! Even if you don’t know what you’ve found, take a picture. Photograph the top, the underside and the stem if you can. You can then have a go at identifying it when you get home
❤️ Just enjoy it! You don’t need to know the name of every mushroom you find. Take your time, look closely and appreciate just how extraordinary these little organisms are
Of course, if you’re collecting anything to eat, make absolutely sure it’s been positively identified! Some poisonous mushrooms look remarkably similar to edible ones!
