Wild foods, botanical drinks, foraging walks and workshops. Hello, I'm Fern! Please keep an eye on my page for walks and workshops!

I've been foraging around sussex for over ten years, inspired by my dad, an avid mushroom forager and wonderful teacher. I make delicious seasonal foods, exciting botanical drinks and the occasional lotion or cream from foraged ingredients.

Did you know there are 2500 species of moths in the UK? And that 360 of them are day flying? And that most moths only live for two weeks and don’t have mouths? And that some can eat plastic? And that they’re important pollinators? Well I didn’t, but now I do! 🥹✨

I was feeling completely and utterly overwhelmed on Friday (just the classic mix of climate anxiety and wildfire worry and diminishing numbers of wildlife doom 🫠) and happily committed to a no social media weekend of spending time with friends in Bristol! ☀️

I’d been wanting to go to a moth morning for a really long time (new hyper-obsession incoming I think) so I went to Windmill Hill City Farm for a moth morning with Charlie and Willow Charlie & Willow | Community moth project under the trees 🌳 and it was sooo fun!

We learnt so much about moths and opened the moth trap to discover who had come to visit overnight! This is a straw underwing (the dark, beautifully patterned one) and a mother of pearl (the light and iridescent one) 🌾 oh and some beautiful sketches made by a girl who was also at the moth morning!

And then we went for a lovely big walk around Bristol, found a lovely chicken of the woods, made dinner and ate in the greenhouse 🥹 How’s your weekend been? Any wonderful discoveries on your end?! 🤞

Oh ALSO I want to thank everyone for your lovely words of advice and encouragement after I expressed my anxieties on stories on Friday - I’m still reading through everything in my inbox but it’s been so hopeful to see how many of you feel the same and want to know how to help 🌍 and so lovely to hear from the people who said my page helps them feel connected to nature and makes them want to plant and protect and that just fills my heart with so much peace and joy 💚🌱

Let me take you with me to the lovely old English town of Cheddar - where Cheddar cheese originated and the Cheddar man was found! 🧀

We’ll begin here.. on this log that I decided would make an excellent photo opportunity! I subsequently got stuck on the log for some time. Because going up is always so much easier than coming down 😅

Anyway… WORTH IT!

We went on a little hike around the outskirts of Cheddar first to take in the sights. ⛰️ It was beautiful but the most beautiful moment by far started with Nimbus alerting us to a little feeble object gently splashing in a water trough…

It was this soggy little Eurasian Blue Tit, he’d obviously tried to get a drink and fallen in 💔 we scooped him up, he was dead cold and shakey, and there wasn’t a nest in sight, so a debate ensued. Do we leave him? Or take him? 🏡

I was determined to take him home and look after him forever and Paul was determined that we leave him behind and let nature take its course (he has been brokenhearted in the past, after bringing home injured things and them dying in his care)

This debate was going to take some time. So we sat down to relax for a while, and make a coffee ☕️ little bird sat in my palm while the sun slowly dried his feathers ☀️

And then…

He just hopped away! And started happily chirping in a hawthorn tree! 🌳 Job done, debate unnecessary, bird rescued, a great start to the adventure!

Then it was time to walk into Cheddar village (which was so cute and had loads of great shops and cafes!) and enter Gough’s Cave (Nimbus actually really didn’t mind being in the cave, despite looking petrified here 😅) where you can walk through the illuminated chambers with an audio guide!

Gough’s cave is one of the UK’s most important archeological sites and I’ve been wanting to visit for ages! 😍 It began forming over 500,000 years ago as underground rivers slowly carved through the limestone, creating the vast chambers full of stalactites and stalagmites!

People have used the cave for at least 14,700 years. Ice Age hunter-gatherers sheltered here, leaving behind tools, animal bones and evidence of their l

I always end up making cocktails with pineapple w**d! 🍸 I think it’s because that pineapple w**d jelly sweet smell gets me all giddy and excited and then I need a drink 🤣

Oh I also tried to make pineapple w**d jelly sweets but they just were a bit blah! They just didn’t live up to the smell somehow? But, pineapple w**d soaked in booze is always amazing! 🤌

Pop a few handfuls of pineapple w**d into a jar, cover it with tequila (or gin, or vodka), leave it for 5-7 days, and POW! You have distilled that amazing smell into a jar and you’re ready to make cocktails!

I know my beautiful friend Roo loves a paloma so that’s what I went for and they were SO DELICIOUS! Tangy and refreshing and so fragrant with pineapple w**d smell! 😍

Just combine:
6oz pineapple w**d tequila
6oz grapefruit juice
Sparkling water

And decorate with some pineapple w**d! (Or lemon balm when you run out of pineapple w**d as I did in this video 😅)

I feel SO lucky to be able to have my friends over in such a sweet little outdoor space! Literally every thing, sofas, table, blankets, cushions and little decor pieces is from 💚 they have such a wonderful range of garden and home items and it’s built to last, which is SO important for me! 🙌

They’re also a certified B-corp so YAY! 🥳
