Today we made the most of the sunshine with a big stomp around Highdown Gardens. The children loved exploring the pathways and spotting all the signs of spring around them.
During snack time, we turned into mini wildlife watchers, keeping our eyes peeled for birds and butterflies. The children used fantastic observational skills, pointing out colours, sizes and movements — a lovely link to Understanding the World.
On our adventure we even discovered where the Gruffalo lives. Luckily, he must have been out for a stroll, but the children had great fun imagining what he might be doing and using lots of expressive language.
In the sensory garden, the children enjoyed a good sniff of the plants, noticing which ones smelled sweet, spicy or earthy. This supported their sensory exploration and encouraged them to use descriptive vocabulary.
We also talked about roots — what they look like, how they grow underground, and why plants need them to drink water and stay strong. The children asked brilliant questions and made thoughtful connections to what they’ve seen in our allotment
A wonderful morning full of curiosity, imagination and hands‑on learning in nature 🐞🌺
