Why puppy number 3?

And yes, that is a bit of p**s on my arm

Walter is 8, and with some health issues, I want to make the most of the time he has to teach a puppy his incredible social skills.

Ronnie is 4 and the best he’s ever been, making now the right time to build a puppy alongside him. When he was younger and spicer - it would have not been responsible to get a puppy, due to puppies learning from my existing dogs - this is called social learning

I also want to explore dog sports and raise a large, stable female who can eventually become a stooge dog, helping other dogs overcome behavioural challenges and allowing Walter to retire when he’s ready

Why a Rottweiler? I considered Dobermanns and Schnauzers, spoke to multiple breeders, and ultimately felt the Rottweiler best suited our family, goals and lifestyle due to health, temperament and general breed characteristics. With two boys already, a female felt like the right fit. I want a different dog breed to challenge and push me as a trainer

This isn’t about replacing my boys. It’s about building on what they’ve taught me and planning for the future 💙

Reactive dog?

The first step isn’t throwing your dog straight into the situations they struggle with

You need to manage the behaviour, stop the constant rehearsal and get the baseline better first

Then we build from there -communication, motivation, interruption, handling skills, timing and control

Once you’ve got those foundations, you can start working on exposure, confidence and helping your dog learn that they can cope around their triggers

And remember, this isn’t just about building your dog’s confidence.

It’s about building your confidence too!!

Just because your dog spooked at a carrier bag blowing down the street doesn’t necessarily mean they’re nervous and need to be scooped up & protected at all costs

Sometimes they’re just… unsure

There’s a difference.. Not every jump, pause or side-eye requires an emergency extraction

People really do seem to mix up ‘I’m not sure about that’ with ‘I am deeply traumatised by this experience’ 😂

Let the dog have a moment to process and move on

The thing that made the biggest difference in my training wasn’t what you’d expect

For a long time I thought it was all about conquering one behaviour and quickly moving to teaching the next. It wasn’t.

It came down to getting so many successful reps of the same behaviour and once that clicked, the whole relationship with my dogs got easier

Teach - Practice - low distraction - med distraction - high distraction

But the practice part of this sequence is so important. Practice, polish, perfect & concentrate on the details - if the dog breaks, calmly put them back and teach them breaking at their own accord is no longer an option

You do this a few times and everything else you teach the dog gets easier. Our dogs are not daft!

Practicing can be really boring, but thats the dog training that counts and will shift your relationship for the best

Small dogs are often underestimated!

Just because they’re little doesn’t mean they don’t need boundaries, structure and clear communication. In fact, many of the small dogs I work with have developed big behaviours because people understandably let things slide simply because they’re “only little”

I love helping owners see that their dog doesn’t need to be treated differently because of their size. They deserve the same clarity, consistency and fair training as any other dog

As a trainer, I believe in looking at the individual dog using the right tools and techniques for that dog, and making sure training is fair, clear and effective

Whether it’s reactivity, pulling, recall, barking, overexcitement or simply building better manners, there’s nothing more rewarding than seeing a little dog gain confidence and their owner gain a better understanding of them

Small dog, big personality and sometimes big training needs 😂
