Women in Construction Week, story 2 of 6.
Meet Kerry Geoghegan, who came to us after redundancy and chose our Department for Education funded Thermal Wall Installation with Carpentry Skills Bootcamp as a practical route into the industry after taking the Introduction to Construction Course at our Doncaster Skills Academy.

Kerry summed it up perfectly: โ€œThis course gave me the confidence and know-how to go self-employed.โ€

From day one she felt supported with guidance, information and PPE, and she especially valued learning core carpentry skills including tool use and maintenance.

Since completing the programme, Kerry has taken confident steps into self-employment, supported by extra IAG including digital marketing guidance and even help creating a logo.

Women in Construction Week, story 1 of 6.
Meet Andrea Allpress. After spotting our course at the Job Centre, Andrea took the leap into construction, gained her CSCS card, discovered a real passion for the industry, and went on to complete our Skills Bootcamp in Bricklaying (DfE funded).

Since training, Andreaโ€™s career momentum has been incredible:
Site Assistant (internship) โ†’ Site Administrator โ†’ Mobilisation Administrator โ†’ Commercial Assistant โ†’ Trainee Quantity Surveyor โ†’ Contract Administrator โ†’ Commercial Administrator (Barratt Developments).

Andrea put it best: โ€œMy transition into construction gave me a space where my skills were valued and my confidence could grow.โ€

Huge thank you to Travis Perkins in Worksop for donating extra timber to support our learners, for the second time! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿชต

Our tutor Glyn Brumby has been chatting with Russell and the team, who are also looking at donating damaged plasterboards and short-dated plaster for us to use in training. That means more hands-on practice, more confidence, and more real skills for learners.

Theyโ€™ve even offered to take small learner groups over for a look around and to explain how a buildersโ€™ merchant works, a great behind-the-scenes learning opportunity.
