Looking Back: Year 9 at the Festival of Work

At the end of last academic year, our Year 9 students took part in the annual Festival of Work, hosted by All Together Cumbria at Lakes College.

More than 1,250 local students took part in a packed day of activities, including Q&A sessions with Josh MacAlister MP , robotics, health and fitness, sustainable school design, employer engagement and tours of the fantastic facilities at Lakes College.

It was a brilliant opportunity for our students to explore different careers, develop new skills and find out more about the opportunities available to them in the future.

A huge thank you to All Together Cumbria and Lakes College for inviting us. As ever, our students represented St Joseph’s impeccably throughout the day.

Celebrating Year 7 Design Technology

At the end of last academic year, Mrs Clitheroe’s Year 7 Design Technology classes completed their key hook projects, with some fantastic finished outcomes.

Students worked through the design and making process to create their own individual pieces, developing their practical skills and creativity along the way.

The final results look brilliant, and the photos really show the care and effort that went into each one.

Well done, Year 7! A great end to your Design Technology work for the year.

Looking Back at Activities Week: Think, Adapt, Team Up

Things got competitive during Activities Week when our Year 9 and 10 students took on a series of Skills Builder-style challenges designed to test their teamwork, communication, problem solving and adaptability.

Plans were made, tested, and very quickly changed as teams worked out how to improve their chances of success.

It was brilliant to see students listening to one another, staying patient, bouncing back when things did not go to plan and working together to find solutions.

A great session full of energy, resilience and some excellent teamwork.

Looking Back: Year 8 CyberFirst Mini MEGA Event

At the end of last academic year, around 30 of our Year 8 students attended the Cumbrian Energus CyberFirst Mini MEGA event in Workington.

Students explored cybersecurity, AI, robotics and nuclear technologies, including learning about Open Source Intelligence and how easily digital information can be found online.

They also took on an AI prompting challenge, with some of our students achieving the highest scores of the day.

We were especially proud of the fantastic feedback about their behaviour and impeccable manners throughout.

Students who enjoyed the day can continue developing their skills through our Computer Club and Lego Robotics Club, returning in B3 this autumn.

Looking Back at Activities Week: Scafell Pike

A huge well done to some of our Year 10 students who took on one of the biggest challenges of Activities Week 2026, climbing Scafell Pike, England’s highest mountain.

It was a tough day, made even more challenging by the heat, but the group showed fantastic determination and resilience as they made their way through some spectacular Lake District scenery.

Well done to everyone who reached the summit, a brilliant achievement and a day to be proud of.

A big thank you to Mr Davidson and Mr Swain for leading the walk and making sure everyone got up and down safely.

Looking Back: Year 9 Digital Music Awards

At the end of last academic year, our whole Year 9 completed a Digital Music unit, learning how to use BandLab to create and produce their own original pieces of music.

As part of the unit, students put their new skills into practice in a year-group competition, with awards recognising creativity, effort and technical skill. There were three award categories:

Rising Star Award
For standout original tracks, with shortlisted entries going forward to a blind vote.

St Joseph’s Way Award
Recognising students who showed hard work, kindness and a determination to achieve their best throughout the project.

Producer of the Year Award
For the strongest use of BandLab and music production techniques.

Everyone nominated for an award received a certificate, with the winner of each category receiving their very own personalised “Grammy”.

It was a fantastic way for students to develop their creativity, digital skills and confidence, and we were really impressed by the originality and effort shown across the year group.

Looking Back at Activities Week: Maryport to Allonby

Another of our Activities Week year-group walks took students along our beautiful Cumbrian coastline from Maryport to Allonby. It was a fantastic walk in lovely surroundings, with the added bonus of a very welcome ice cream at the finish.

A big thank you to the staff at Twentymans Icecream, who were extremely complimentary about our students and gave them such a warm welcome.

A brilliant day out and another great example of why our annual year-group walks are such a special part of Activities Week.

Looking Back at Activities Week: Year Group Walks

One of our favourite Activities Week traditions is our annual Year Group Walks.

Each year group heads out together for a different walk, exploring some of the fantastic scenery we have on our doorstep across the Cumbrian coast and the Lake District.

It is always a brilliant opportunity for students and staff to spend time together outside the classroom, enjoy the outdoors and finish the academic year with a real sense of community.

The walks are a simple but important part of Activities Week, time to talk, laugh, encourage one another and enjoy being together as a year group.

A great St Joseph’s tradition, and one we look forward to every year.

Looking Back at Activities Week: Liverpool Art Trip

Another brilliant Activities Week experience from the end of last academic year saw our Art, Photography and 3D Design students head to Liverpool for a day packed with creative inspiration.

Despite the very hot weather, students had a fantastic day exploring the city and visiting Museum of Liverpool and the Tate North pop-up at RIBA.

The exhibitions, architecture and artwork gave students plenty of ideas and inspiration to take forward into their GCSE projects this year, as well as the chance to experience art and design in a completely different setting.

A great day of creativity, culture and inspiration, and another fantastic way to round off the school year.

Looking Back at Activities Week: Sports Day

We’ve still got some brilliant moments from the end of last academic year to share, starting with our Activities Week Sports Day at Workington Leisure Centre.

Activities Week is always a fantastic way to finish the school year, giving our students the chance to get involved, try something different and enjoy spending time together outside the usual timetable.

Across our Sports Day, students took part in a great mix of activities including pickleball, football, badminton and benchball, with plenty of teamwork and healthy competition along the way.

It was brilliant to see so many students getting involved and representing the SJCHS Way, working hard, being kind and giving their best.

A huge thank you to our staff for organising the days, and to the team at Workington Leisure Centre for welcoming us and helping everything run so smoothly.
