๐Ÿ”† Treat the person, NOT just the diagnosis.

Modern rehabilitation begins with a simple but important principle:

Two people with the same diagnosis may require completely different care.

Musculoskeletal conditions are influenced not only by pathology, but also by function, physical capacity, psychological wellbeing, personal goals, work demands, lifestyle, and social context. Consequently, effective rehabilitation cannot rely solely on diagnosis or imaging findings.

๐Ÿ“š Contemporary clinical guidelines consistently recommend person-centred care, in which treatment decisions are guided by the individualโ€™s values, goals, functional limitations, and overall life context rather than by diagnosis alone.

๐Ÿ’ก Key message
A diagnosis explains what a person has.

Clinical reasoning seeks to understand how it affects their life.

Evidence-based physiotherapy therefore focuses not only on treating the condition, but on helping the individual regain meaningful function, participation, and quality of life.

โžก๏ธ In the next post, we will explore why person-centred care is considered one of the foundations of contemporary physiotherapy practice.

As discussions around Deskilling, Mis-skilling, and Never-skilling continue, it is equally important to recognize what AI cannot replace in physiotherapy.

AI can support assessments, summarize evidence, monitor progress, and reduce administrative workload. These capabilities can improve efficiency and allow clinicians to spend more time with their patients.

However, physiotherapy is more than information processing or selecting an intervention.

At the core of our profession is the therapeutic allianceโ€”the collaborative relationship between the physiotherapist and the patient, built on trust, communication, empathy, and shared decision-making. Together with patient-centred care, it remains one of the strongest predictors of engagement, adherence, and meaningful rehabilitation outcomes.

Effective rehabilitation is not simply about choosing the right intervention. It is about delivering the right care, through the right mechanism, at the right time, and for the right person.

These are not merely professional competenciesโ€”they are human qualities that help patients understand their condition, navigate uncertainty, and regain confidence in movement and daily life.

AI will undoubtedly become an increasingly valuable tool in physiotherapy. But tools do not replace therapeutic relationships, and algorithms cannot substitute the human connection that underpins rehabilitation.

The future of physiotherapy is not a choice between AI and clinicians. It is about integrating technology responsibly while preserving the clinical reasoning, empathy, and therapeutic alliance that define our profession.

AI can augment physiotherapy practice, but it cannot replace the human qualities that build clinical competence and meaningful patient care.

Thank you Prof Yvonne Thomas for two fantastic weeks of research, learning and sharing! Yvonne kindly shared her deep knowledge of the new CanMOP model with the OT teaching team before hosting a lively interactive lecture for students, practice educators and academic colleagues across a range of professions on the Five Finger Framework for professional reasoning. We are extremely grateful for your wisdom and generosity in sharing, and for the opportunity to research and write together too. Sending our very best wishes back to New Zealand with you!

The pitfalls of the all-encompassing term of "chest physio" and why the language we use matters. An insightful read for all physiotherapists.

Today we have extra reason to be proud of BSc Course Leader Dr Sophie Knight at the opening of an exhibition she has co-curated. Strike A Light, exhibited by The Elizabeth Casson Trust at Rugby Art Gallery & Museum is the first ever exhibition of occupational therapy! It showcases stories, artefacts and artwork that show how what we do is central to who we are and celebrates the diversity of doing. The exhibition runs until 16th May. Please visit - and massive congratulations to our very own Sophie, and on a spectacular grand opening!
