When pedagogy meets technology, people shouldn't just "complete" training - they should evolve.
Here are 5 principles to make that happen:
Boredom kills – if something isn’t interesting then we switch off and our minds wonder. Boredom means important things aren’t being remembered – sessions need to be engaging and interesting. Tip: Prioritise high-impact visuals and storytelling because when learners are bored, retention vanishes.
Repetition rocks – Just like when we don’t use our muscles they waste away, so do our brains. Learning is more beneficial when the knowledge or skills gained are used frequently. Tip: Integrate frequent opportunities for recall and skill application, ensuring that new information moves from short-term memory into long-term habits.
Don’t overload – We have a limited amount of working memory – just like a computer. Therefore, training should be delivered in manageable bite sized chunks to not overload people. Tip: Respect the learner’s bandwidth and prevent mental fatigue.
Keep it relevant – If a learner can’t make a connection between what they are being taught and why they need to know it, then they won’t learn. Motivation is key to making learning worth while. Tip: Make the "why" just as important as the "how."
Opening Minds – Learning becomes more difficult as we get older and isn’t always about imparting knowledge, sometimes it can be about exploring other ways of thinking. Tip: To navigate the complexities of adult learning, focus on an environment where users feel safe to challenge their own thinking and explore innovative ways of problem-solving.
