Whether your child is transitioning to high school from primary school, or back into school after a period of time out of the system, they might be experiencing anxiety about the move. We've put together a few tips on supporting anxious learners during transition - here is a brief outline, but you can find our blog (link in bio) which explores the topic in more detail.

Keep lines of communication open:
Listen to their fears without judgment and collaborate with school staff to put a support plan in place.

Establish routines early:
Gradually adjust sleep schedules and morning rhythms before term starts to offer a sense of predictability.

Familiarise them with the route and layout:
Practice the journey to school and discuss key areas like form rooms and lunch halls to reduce fear of the unknown.

The new term is a couple of weeks away now - here are a few tips for a strong start:

1: Tidy your space.🧹

Desk feeling the brunt of the holidays? Have a good tidy, sharpen your pencils, treat yourself to a new notebook!
Tidy desk, tidy mind!

2: Set a goal.βœ…οΈ

Drink more water?
Get to sleep on time?
Reduce your screen time?
It doesn’t matter what it is; but setting goals has been shown to lead to success.

3: Prioritise rest.πŸ’€

Good sleep helps your body recover and your mind stay clear. Aim for consistent, restful nights whenever possible.

What tips would you add to this list to help students have a great start to the academic year?

Keeping older children and teenagers entertained during the school holidays can be a challenge, but outdoor adventures are a brilliant way to keep them active and engaged without breaking the bank.

Here are four ideas to get them outdoors:

🚣 Canoeing the River Wye: A memorable way to spend the day on the water. Look for group hire discounts to keep costs down, and always make sure everyone wears a buoyancy aid and follows local river safety guidance from the trained organisers.

🌳 Go Ape: Ideal for thrill-seekers looking to tackle the high ropes. Keep an eye out for off-peak booking offers or family tickets, and ensure all safety briefings are strictly followed.

πŸ”οΈ Walking the Malverns End-to-End: A completely free option offering spectacular views and a solid physical challenge. Pack plenty of water, suitable footwear, and check the weather forecast in advance to ensure safe conditions on the ridge. Be sure to avoid lighting any BBQs, fires or dropping anything flammable while you're up there.

πŸ”Ž Geocaching: Turn a standard walk into a real-life treasure hunt using a free geocaching app. It costs virtually nothing and is a really fun day out - you'll be amazed at how many geocaches are hidden around you everywhere!

Mixing budget-friendly activities with the occasional paid day out keeps things affordable while ensuring everyone stays safe and happy. What are your favourite holiday activity ideas for older kids?

Summer Story Starter πŸ–ŠοΈβ˜€οΈ

Summer is the perfect time to get creative. Here's a story starter - finish it in the comments, or write it down and bring it in to show your tutor after the holidays!

"You find a message in an old, glass bottle washed up on the bank of the River Severn in Worcester. The paper is water-stained but the handwriting is clear: "If you're reading this, I've left something buried at the top of Fort Royal Hill" It includes exact coordinates for where to find the mysterious hidden treasure.
What's hidden on the hill? A lockbox? A locket? A clue to a further mystery? You decide."

Need some fun summer activities? Why not try planning a history trail? β›ͺ️ 🎢 πŸ”οΈ

Try this loop: start at the Worcester Cathedral, walk to The Commandery for Civil War exhibits, then head up to the Battle of Worcester site at Fort Royal Park.

Finish with a trip to the Malvern Hills for the views that inspired Elgar's Enigma Variations. Pack a picnic and make a day of it!
