This workshop explores why play is essential to human development, wellbeing, and relationships. What about older children or children with complex needs? Through guided discussion, the session supports critical reflection on how beliefs about play shape everyday practice.

This workshop brings together learning from across the play curriculum to examine how playwork theory informs everyday practice, particularly in response to the decline of play highlighted by Peter Gray. It explores inclusive practice, encouraging practitioners to reflect on whether current play opportunities truly meet diverse needs or unintentionally exclude some children. Through discussion and tutor led challenge, the session supports practitioners to connect theory to practice, reconsider assumptions, and identify ways to protect and promote children’s right to play in a changing social landscape.

This workshop examines the Play Cycle from Pete King and Gordon Sturrock, and intervention styles, drawing on the work of the Colorado Paper, and Bob Hughes. Practitioners will meet online to critically examine their own approaches to intervention, debate different viewpoints, and engage with challenging practice scenarios, using tutor led questioning and peer discussion to deepen and extend their thinking around key play topics.

During the course delegates will explore what Wrap Around Care is and understand the value of play, unpick and dissect the 8 Principles of Playwork, and how to implement them into their setting to ensure play matters.

During the course delegates will be able to:

• Describe & explain why the 8 Principles of Playwork are important in Play
• Participate in activities that empower your own understanding of why play matters
• Identify & explain how the Playwork Principles will be used in your setting.

Audience: Specifically for practitioners working with primary school age children in wraparound provision. Open to both schools / settings who offer wrap around provision (before / after school or holiday clubs)

Cost: The training is fully funded via the National Wraparound Programme, part of the DfE
