Sixty years ago this week, alumna Sheila Scott made history as the first British person to fly solo around the world.

Completing the remarkable journey in 34 days and covering more than 31,000 miles, Sheila became one of Britain’s most celebrated aviators and was later described as “Worcester’s most famous daughter of the 20th century”.

A pupil at Alice Ottley School for 12 years, Sheila’s fascination with flying reportedly began after childhood visits to the “Flying Circus” at Pitchcroft, an early interest that would eventually see her make aviation history.

In 2023, a blue plaque was unveiled at RGS Worcester in recognition of Sheila’s remarkable achievements and connection to the School.

As we mark this important anniversary, it is especially wonderful to see opportunities linked to aviation continuing to inspire pupils across The RGS Worcester Family of Schools today through the School’s Flying Club, launched in partnership with British Young Pilots.

Through hands-on flight theory, simulation and opportunities to take to the skies in real aircraft, the programme encourages confidence, curiosity and ambition, while helping pupils explore the world of aviation and STEM in a genuinely exciting and practical way.

An extraordinary alumna whose legacy continues to inspire future generations and one we are delighted to celebrate.

The countdown is on to this year’s Alice Ottley Alumnae Summer Gathering.

On Saturday 20 June, we look forward to welcoming back over 80 Alice Ottleians from across the decades, with alumnae from the 1950s through to the 2000s already booked to attend.

The Summer Gathering remains one of the highlights of the alumni calendar, as Alice Ottleians return to rekindle friendships, reminisce about shared experiences at the School, sign Candida Rectaque on the Apse and sit once again on the Naughty Bench.

This year’s gathering will also include reunion celebrations for the Classes of 1986 and 1996 as they mark their 40th and 30th anniversary years.

If you would like to join us and have not yet booked, there is still time to reserve your place. We would like to finalise numbers by 25 May.
