I have always loved to sing. In fact, I can’t remember a time when I didn’t sing, and my family are always rather mystified as to where I get it from, as none of them are really ‘performer’ types, if you know what I mean. My mother often recalls the tale of when she used to take me out in the baby buggy, and I would happily sing and gurgle as we went to the shops or the park, with my hand in our great dane’s mouth, (but that’s another story) I also used to sing as a toddler, sat in the child seat of her push bike as she cycled along. I think she got a bit embarrassed to be honest as people seeing her coming head on couldn’t see me, so thought it was her making all the noise…
I joined the choir and recorder club at primary school (like you do), and then various choirs and orchestras at high school, and with my best friend Nick (who is now an opera singer) we discovered the joys of Gilbert and Sullivan (always a good musical grounding for chorus and harmony work). Whilst studying for my degree, I was introduced to the sparkly world of musical theatre and have never looked back. This was the 80’s, so it was all mega-musicals and Andrew Lloyd Webber, Les Mis and Miss Saigon, and from then on I was hooked. Since then I have sung, performed, taught, arranged ad rehearsed for a huge variety of occasions and events, and feel blessed that my job involved doing what I truly love. My lessons are informal and relaxed (you can’t sing well if you are tense) and I specialise in Musical Theatre singing and performance at all levels. A typical lesson lasts for an hour and includes vocal warm ups, techniques, song learning and performance. A lot of my students successfully audition for drama schools across the country, but I also teach younger voices, which is always fun! I only ask that you bring passion and enthusiasm to lessons; I will provide everything else, including cups of tea and biscuits! I derive a lot of pleasure and pride from seeing my students develop and grow, and am always glad to welcome them back for ‘one-off’ lessons, when they return from touring, drama school or whatever other amazing things they get up to! Please feel free drop me a message or email if you would like further information.
