This workshop brings together learning from across the play curriculum to examine how playwork theory informs everyday practice, particularly in response to the decline of play highlighted by Peter Gray. It explores inclusive practice, encouraging practitioners to reflect on whether current play opportunities truly meet diverse needs or unintentionally exclude some children. Through discussion and tutor led challenge, the session supports practitioners to connect theory to practice, reconsider assumptions, and identify ways to protect and promote childrenโs right to play in a changing social landscape.

This workshop explores why play is essential to human development, wellbeing, and relationships. Practitioners will be encouraged to question common assumptions about play, including ideas around purpose, risk, adult control. Is play seen as optional or essential? What about older children or children with complex needs? Through guided discussion, the session supports critical reflection on how beliefs about play shape everyday practice.
