Minimal pair Fly swat! 🪰🪰🪰

Targeting the /s/ sound this week using these whiteboard flies and a fly swatter to "splat" the word.

The importance of helping children learn about their diagnosis 🩷👾

So many of my students have a very limited understanding of their diagnosis. When one of my students told me autism means "my brain is broken," I knew I had to start helping the kids understand more about their neurotypes.

There is such beauty in helping a child learn more about what their diagnosis means for them and seeing the "lightbulb" moment when they realise they aren't the only one.

How will our children ever be able to advocate for themselves if they don't understand themselves?
It's not about painting autism as a "superpower" or ADHD as a bundle of creativity, it's about acknowledging the struggles and difficulties, and helping a child accept who they are, building their self esteem and helping them find their own voice.

3 resources that have really helped my students are:

👾 Self Advocacy Toolkit for Autistic young people- this is a free PDF download from The Autism Education Trust (you can find it on their website!)

👾 Wonderfully wired brains by Louise Gooding- a fantastic introduction into the world of neurodiversity.

👾 Autism, Identity, and Me by Rebecca Duffus- a fantastic workbook full of neurodiversity affirming activities.

Phew, it's been a while! Sound Monsters took a little break whilst I navigated some big life changes!

Whilst we have been gone I moved into working in specialist provision supporting students with Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs- and am absolutely LOVING it! It also means I get to work alongside the fabulous
❤️ I'll be posting more frequently from now on- sharing some of what we get up to in the play room!

My husband and I also bought our first home 🏡 And we have begun navigating the current SEN system within our own family. It's been a busy few months!

I am happy to be back and have some new resources to release soon. Thank you to those of you who have continued making orders, it really does mean so much to me.

When a student chooses a whiteboard, post-it notes, pretty pens, and sand during her session, making it a perfect opportunity to target specific sounds in speech therapy & practice phonics skills!!

The Phonies and Vowelies are useful tools for Children with SLCN and dyslexia- using them alongside sensory materials like sand and visual cues and gestures can be really effective, particularly when blending sounds together ❤️
