On Tuesday 9th June, Year 3 embarked on an exciting, hands-on science adventure at the University of Reading's Cole Museum of Zoology.
To explore the incredible variety of animal life, the pupils split into small groups and journeyed through the exhibits. They were amazed by the massive skeleton of "Norman" the Indian circus elephant and looked up in awe at a false killer whale skeleton suspended from the ceiling. They also tracked down a 5-metre-long reticulated python boasting over 400 vertebrae!
While investigating the displays, the children uncovered fascinating facts about skeletons and bones—discovering how animals use their frameworks to move, swim, or protect themselves, and comparing how different creatures' bones have adapted to their environments over millions of years.
To wrap up their successful day of discovery, the young zoologists put their sharp eyes and teamwork to the test by completing a museum quiz, hunting for clues among the fossils and taxidermy. It was a fantastic day of learning that brought their science lessons firmly to life!
