First wedding gig in a while yesterday, I had an absolute blast! So much fun and it will go down as one of my most memorable β¨οΈ
2 hour travelling there and back in an air conditioned car! 2 hour set! Here are some of the things I did to prepare:
π΄ π€ Lots of rest and sleep the night before. Our instrument is our body and we need to make sure we take good care of it in order for it to repair if needs be and to be well rested before expecting it to perform at top capacity.
π§Stayed super hydrated - Made sure I had a bottle of water in my hand at all times throughout the day! You need to be drinking your water BEFORE your gig/ show as it can take 90 minutes for that stuff to reach our vocal folds.
πΏ Steamy shower whilst doing lip bubbles and blow fish SOVTEs π 𫧠These promote efficient vocal fold vibration and balanced adduction enabling a gentle warm up.
π¨ Nebuliser - With a 0.9% Saline solution π this directly hydrates vocal folds. Ask about the difference in session!
π₯€Straw Phonation - Ask about this in session as it can be an incredible part of a singers warm up tool kitπ§ But for a simple explanation, the lower the straw the harder the resistance so you don't want it to sit too low in the water if you are going for a gentle warm up. The wider the straw the better for more fatigued vocals and rehabilitation. I'm not an ENT specialist though so if you have any on going issues with fatigue get yourself an appointment!
πΆ Scales and arpeggios with different fricative, plosive and vowel sounds.
πͺ Lots of walking in the lead up, getting my steps in as performing and dancing for 2 hours requires a certain level of fitness, that admittedly, I don't always possess in these trying times of comfortable sofas and delicious take aways π
.
Overall my voice felt strong, supported, able to move freely through register changes and mixing. I was very happy with my performance thanks to the show prep I put in, it is so worth the minimal effort you have to go to.
Always happy to create a vocal warm up and vocal health tool kit so please ask in session and we will get to it, if we haven't already π
