Well done Sami👏
Sami Tunga is a Enhancing Ward Experience (EWE) Volunteer at New Cross Hospital. He’s been in post for just over a month.
He and other EWE Volunteers support by:
• Answering the ward phone and taking messages
• Answering the ward door and assisting visitors and healthcare colleagues
• Fetching items for staff such as medical records
• Befriending: sitting and talking to patients and/or playing games with them to help reduce their boredom whilst in hospital
Sami, age 17, is currently studying Biology, Chemistry and Maths at school, and is an aspiring dentist.
He said: “Volunteering at the NHS has completely changed my perspective. Observing the strength and resilience of patients and healthcare workers every day has made me more grateful, empathetic, and aware of the impact that even small acts of kindness can have on someone’s life.”
The volunteer describes how volunteering has helped him to develop his social skills – boosting his confidence and giving him empathy.
He would “encourage anyone thinking about volunteering to try it because it helps support the community and allows you to gain valuable experience.”
