Do you know that it is Hedgehog Awareness Week? If you want to do your bit to help these incredible creatures, here are two simple things you can do:
1. if you have a garden, make sure there are gaps in the fences so hedgehogs can travel through. Hedgehogs travel about 2km each night looking for food so they need a wide area to explore. A small hole 13cm x 13cm will do.
2. Make an undisturbed log pile for food and shelter - it doesn't have to be too big.
And always remember to be very careful mowing and strimming your garden - especially the first of the year as you could be disturbing spots where hedgehogs may be hiding.
You could learn more about our spikey friends in our Helping Hedgehogs session during the forthcoming May half-term holiday programme. https://bit.ly/388C5eK

Sometimes the simplest pleasures in life are those that are free of charge. It doesn't cost us anything to appreciate the beauty of nature, and simply taking a quiet moment to see what is all around us can be beneficial in so many ways
We keep these on board as a reminder of what to do when we go under a low bridge or tunnel... If you would like to help us continue providing narrowboat trips and a host of other activities to the local community, our Spring fundraising campaign is now live! All donations made this week will be doubled thanks to the generosity of Go to https://bit.ly/3v6qu7A for details. One Donation Twice the Impact... ('Duck!')
We believe that respecting the natural environment and all its inhabitants in the way we live and behave, is a duty fundamental to us all. As a community organisation, we strive to be , but there was something in the colour of these flowers this morning that seemed to resonate with the current global situation. We hope you enjoy their apolitical beauty as much as we do.
Our BigGive Green Match Fund page is now open . Of course we’d love you to help us continue what we do, but our ethos is based firmly on enhancing emotional health and wellbeing and we don’t want anyone feeling they should be supporting us if it would be a stretch of their own finances and cause anxieties elsewhere. So if you can offer your support that’s great, if not why not come along to Wildside and see how we can support you. The BigGive Green Match Fund - double your support for Wildside. https://bit.ly/3v6qu7A
Can you call it a busman's holiday if you're on a narrowboat? Enjoying a trip on the UK's tallest aquaduct. Great hosting from Canal & River Trust
"Even though the needs of some of our members are quite complex, the staff are accommodating and clearly have a passion to make their site accessible to all. The sessions they run are fun and informative, connect members with nature and their local community, and help develop interests and skills." Help us carry on the incredible work we do by donating to our BigGive Green Match Fund campaign which opens on 22.04.22 https://bit.ly/3v6qu7A
As a thank you for all the hard work they put in over the year, our volunteers had the chance to step back and enjoy the slower pace of life by taking a specially chartered trip on our narrowboat recently. If you'd like to find out more about volunteering at Wildside go to: https://bit.ly/3jEZOFI
Going green this April will have double the benefits. During our Spring fundraising campaign, any donations made to Wildside will be matched £ for £. So, for every £ donated we will benefit by £2 thanks to the support from the BigGive Green Match Fund. Our donations page opens in just three days time so watch this space! https://bit.ly/3v6qu7A

January can feel like a difficult month for many of us, but getting out into nature can often help to boost our sense of well being. We hope this quote inspires you as much as it did us to get out and enjoy (and look after!) the nature around you: "whenever you feel dispirited, weary, or down, simply look up to the trees and you’ll feel better. Love a tree today because trees are keeping us and this planet alive" (Anon)

Thinking about making a New Years Resolution? How about joining in with the "Mains to Rains” pledge: Water the way nature intended. It may seem like a strange time to be thinking about saving water but setting up good habits now will help in the summer when its really needed.

Mains water usage in our homes and gardens is often highest when water availability is lowest – in hot, dry periods. However, by adopting a few simple pledges, we can all make our gardens and outdoor spaces thrive on the rainfall we receive by collecting it and re-using it during dry spells. So let’s change "from mains to rains"

Happy New Year from everyone at Wildside Activity Centre!

Photos from Wildside Activity Centre's post 27/12/2022

It's that quiet time between Christmas and New Year, so why not get out into nature and enjoy the beauty of a winter's day. Hopefully it will be more bright and crisp and even rather than wet and windy, but whatever the weather, getting out into nature is a great way to boost your mental and physical health and well being.

Merry Christmas to all our friends, colleagues and supporters from everyone Wildside Activity Centre

We are now closed until Tuesday 3rd January. We wish everyone a happy and healthy festive season and look forward to seeing you all in the New Year.

21/12/2022

Throughout history festive decorations have centred on the use of evergreen plants. They symbolise the promise of new life returning in the spring. During the 19th century wreaths were made to hang on the front door. These wreaths were also known as ‘welcome rings’ and usually consisted of holly, ivy, pine cones and ribbons. As we prepare to close our office for the holidays we would like to wish you all a happy festive season and we look forward to welcoming you to Wildside in 2023. (thanks to Maggy Mason for the photo)

We often take the more common wildlife that surrounds us for granted, but they have their unique skills and personalities and bring so much to enhance our world. Take a closer look at the nature that surrounds us... it can be amazing

12/12/2022

Winter can be a difficult time of year. As the leaves fall, along with light levels and temperatures, it can seem like a season to be endured rather than enjoyed. In a world that is ever more "non-stop", where we are available almost continuously, slowing down can feel like a luxury. Winter is a time of incubation, restoration and secret preparation for the spring and nature reminds us that a little down time allows us to recharge our batteries both mentally and physically.

Despite the cold there was some lovely wildlife to be seen out and about near the Centre on Saturday. Both a Kingfisher and a Heron popped out to say hello as the Trebalisa went past. Plus we had a very special visitor on our boat trip - can you spot him too? Lovely to see so many happy smiling faces. Thanks to Lisa for the photographs.

It looks like pond dipping might be off the agenda for a couple of days! The frost and ice are getting us in an early festive mood, but there's still plenty of time to enjoy the beauty of the winter landscape before then.

Photos from Wildside Activity Centre's post 06/12/2022

There's been a 'buzz' about Wildside recently after this magnificent creature was spotted taking some time out to survey the local habitat from one of our trees. The young buzzard remained with us for quite a while which gave us the opportunity to take in the incredible beauty of this bird of prey.

If you are working in your garden this weekend, try not to be quite so 'enthusiastic' when it comes to clearing the ivy. It's not always a plant we give too much thought to, but the little green flowers of the ivy are one of the best sources of pollen and nectar for late insects. Find a big patch of ivy on a sunny autumn day and it could be (literally) buzzing with bees like the Ivy Bee, which hatches late in the year specifically to catch the ivy pollen. You may even be lucky enough to see a lovely late butterfly like a Red Admiral feeding and showing off its colours in the autumn sun.

Can anyone recommend a scaffolding company who may want to support a small local charity in its drive towards becoming self-sufficient in renewable energy? Wildside Activity Centre is currently in the process of putting in a green heating system and we need to install solar panels on the roof of our centre. We have been told the installation will only take three days to complete, so if there’s a company out there who would like to be associated with an innovative green energy project – we’d be happy to shout your name from the rooftops (quite literally) or more sensibly via social media and our press communications. Get in touch via 01902 754612 or by emailing [email protected]
