💔 Our MILK ALLERGY story…. from a Mum who never expected it to happen.
My daughter was diagnosed with a milk protein allergy when she was just three months old.
After removing dairy from her diet, her symptoms completely stopped within a couple of months. We became very careful about what she ate, always checking ingredients and making sure we understood what was safe for her.
When she was around one, we went out for lunch. The children’s dessert included ice cream and fruit. We were told it was vegan ice cream, so we genuinely believed it would be safe for her. She had her dessert, and we thought nothing more of it.
Shortly after leaving the restaurant, something just didn't feel right. She was so young that she couldn't tell us what was wrong. She wasn't crying or necessarily showing us exactly where she was hurting — she was just not herself.
As we drove home, I noticed she was drooling a lot more than usual. Something about her just didn't seem right, and that horrible feeling in my stomach told me we needed to act. Thankfully, we weren't far from A&E, so we went straight there.
By the time we arrived, her entire body was covered in hives. They had started across her face and torso before spreading to her arms and legs. Wherever she scratched or where her clothes rubbed against the welts, they began joining together. And then we noticed that her tongue was noticeably swollen too.
As a mum, seeing your child like that is absolutely terrifying. 💔
She was treated immediately with antihistamines and steroids to help control the reaction and bring the hives down.
Thankfully, within an hour or two, she was starting to look like herself again. The hives settled relatively quickly and had completely cleared over the following couple of days.
But I will never forget that day.
It taught us that allergic reactions can happen so quickly, and that even when you think you've checked something carefully, there can still be a risk of accidental exposure.
And that is why I share our story.
Not to frighten other parents, but to raise awareness.
If your child has a food allergy, trust your instincts. You know your child better than anyone. If something doesn't feel right, don't ignore that feeling.
And if you're a parent navigating allergies, please know you're not alone. ❤️
