A calorie deficit is king for fat loss.

However, I’m getting tired of seeing it plastered all over Instagram by every Tom, Dick and Harry. 🙄

So instead let’s talk about EXERCISE!

Most people don’t know this but while a calorie deficit is essential for fat loss, research shows that staying physically active is essential for weight loss maintenance.

It doesn’t have to be a huge amount.

And it doesn’t have to be intense either (f**k doing HIIT everyday) 😅

It can be as simple as getting your steps in every single day. 7-10k a day is ideal. 👌🏼

You don’t like walking? Then go for a bike ride.

You don’t like Bikes? Ok then go on the stair master at the gym.

You don’t like the stair master?

You don’t like exercising at all?! 🤔

Well, tough s**t.

We all have to do things we don’t enjoy sometimes. Turns out this one is very important for your health and longevity.

My point is find some form of exercise you love and do a little bit every single day. 🙌🏼

But Jordan you do HIIT training?! 🥴🥴🥴

Yes sometimes I like HIIT.

I sometimes do intermittent fasting too. (Even a few of my clients do as well).

I also include burpees in my client programs and sometimes my own workouts.

And in some cases meal plans are helpful.

But in my opinion they’re overrated.

I see a lot of people using all of the above far to much.

They’re often seen as a panacea rather than a simple tool to use along your fitness journey.

You can use them or you can discard them all together.

Either way, they will not make or break your success 🙌🏼

Now on the other hand…

Sleep is always CRITICAL!

Hydration is CRITICAL. Even slight dehydration can massively impact your performance with training and increase your likelihood of overeating.

Deadlifts are CRITICAL. If you disagree that’s fine. But keep in mind there are many ways to deadlift without using a barbell and lifting crazy heavy weight.

Walking is CRITICAL. If people understood what happened on a cellular level in your body from as little as 20 minutes of walking a day they would be amazed! And they would make a point to walk more every day.

THE IMPORTANCE OF REST

So today I woke up absolutely shattered.

I had the same amount of sleep, the same bedtime routine and morning routine but my body was knackered.

So I listened…

Today I didn’t train and instead I stretched and went for a big walk to still hit my step goal.

Why are rest days important?

1) You’re muscles need to repair and recover. This is when they grow! If they don’t get chance to recover properly you could stunt the growth and progress.

2) You’re nervous system needs to re-generate. Resistance training does take its toll on our CNS. De-load weeks are a big benefit to maintaining progress.

A big point from me for rest days… STAY HYDRATED! Very common for people to slip on their water intake. Myself included. So keep drinking that water 💦

Do you train in the AM or the PM?

Personally I prefer to train in the morning. It helps me wake up, be more alert and focused for the day ahead.

Exercise releases endorphins throughout the body which make you feel good. What’s better way to start the day!

Plus once it’s done, you have the rest of the day to complete other important tasks.

So if you train in the evening after the long work day, I encourage you to try and get up that little bit earlier and get your exercise done.

You won’t regret it. Trust me. ☀️☕️😃

The most delicious types of food in the world aren’t processed.

The most joyful times in life do not involve alcohol.

Exercise is the most overlooked, under utilised and undervalued form of anti-depressant on the planet.

As Nike say… Just Do It.

You’ll feel so much better for it.

It’s not uncommon to feel unmotivated this time of year to workout or go outside for a walk and generally stay active.

It’s cold and wet. The mornings are darker and all you want to do after work is go home and get warm. 🥶

However, why would you want to wait until next year to start all over again? Or undo all the progress you’ve made this year so far!

It might be a lot harder to be consistent and “stay on track” this time of year with all the festivities heading our way. A sneaky celebration chocolate here and there. You know who you are… 👀😂

It will get easier heading into the new year but if you have to “restart” all over again it will make things so much harder.

With many of my clients we focus on maintaining the progress we’ve made so far this year. Instead of trying to push for more progress whilst juggling all the special occasions we have on the weekends.

It can become to much and not always realistic to do so. However we DO NOT GIVE UP.

So if you are feeling a bit unmotivated please don’t give up. Adjust the goal posts slightly and find a routine that works for you. There is no need to pile so much pressure on yourself.

We’re all human. Enjoy the Christmas season and make time for the people you love! 🙏🏼🙌🏼

So following on from my Instagram stories yesterday…

If you’re not seeing any results but you’re not tracking your calorie intake or your daily step count. Maybe you should start…

A few things to understand though:

1) I don’t believe you need to be tracking your calories for the rest of your life. Just long enough for you to consciously know what your daily intake is. If your a competitive bodybuilder and you going through prep then it’s different. You need to be tracking for that certain time period.

2) it’s educational. By tracking you learn how much energy different food groups have in them. That knowledge last forever and is always useful for your health.

3) Tracking is the ONE thing that will help you gain control over your fat loss management. Nothing else is really as effective. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Bottom line is it’s a tool. Gin that knowledge of food and give yourself the best chance possible. 🙌🏼
