Sustainability in practice
Over the last few weeks Life Skills students on our everyday living skills classes have been exploring sustainable living and learning about how the everyday items we buy affect the environment we live in.
This week a group of students attended a sustainability walk and talk with ‘Forestry England’ at Cannock Chase. Students learnt about how they manage the forest to create a sustainable source of wood for a number of industries including to make every day products such as furniture.
Students took part in a walk amongst the trees, identifying species of trees providing an opportunity to discuss some of the issues faced by ‘Forestry England’ in managing the forests. These include the human impact, the impact of animals, disease and pests.
After this, they enjoyed some time developing their communication, problem solving and teamwork skills while den building.
The students would like to say a huge thank you to Jacqui from ‘Forestry England’ for delivering an enjoyable and informative session.
Dreamt of going to university to study for the career of your dreams and don’t have the qualifications?

Our Life Skills Everyday Living skills classes support students to gain the skills they require to lead a healthy life, reducing their dependency on others and increasing their independence. Students build on their personal development: improving confidence, developing social interaction, improving communication skills, relationships and developing resilience.
In response to students and parents/carers who have requested this type of delivery, the room is equipped with everyday items used within the home and is used to replicate everyday situations, allowing students to develop their domestic skills. These skills include making beds, cleaning, washing laundry, washing up and ironing. Students also have access to a microwave, toaster and kettle, which can be used to make simple meals and snacks.
Health and safety is a key aspect as students practice and repeat processes to learn how to perform tasks within the home in a safe environment. Support is gradually removed to increase students' independence.
This week, students have been carrying out everyday tasks, such as making a bed, washing and ironing. Students made themselves a hot drink, after which they washed and dried the mugs and spoons they used. They then washed the tea towels which had been used and hung them to dry. Some students had a go at using the iron while others cleaned the room, using the vacuum, brush and cleaning the work surfaces.
Well done to you all; excellent job!

To prepare students for academic writing requirements.
Access to Higher Education Business and Law, Health Professionals and Social Science Diplomas students visited University of Wolverhampton’s library. With guidance from the academic staff students were shown how to find books, periodicals and to search for articles in the University’s vast database of resources. After successfully finding specific information students had an academic writing workshop on how to plan and structure an essay.
The Exploring the Community Life Skills group visited Eastside City Park in Birmingham to learn about sustainability. They discovered that it opened in 2013 and had been the first new city centre park built in over 130 years. It was built on a brownfield site and has 310 trees to help improve the air quality and provide homes for insects, birds and small mammals. It is easily reached by bus, and there are cycle routes and racks to help reduce traffic in the area. The students all agreed that green spaces are really important in built-up areas and benefit the local community.

Empowering students with learning disabilities: Careers Guidance visit to The Maltings
Identifying the path to achieve a long-term goal can be a daunting task for our students with learning disabilities, as it often signifies embarking on a lengthy journey.
This year, we have taken steps to make things clearer. Leanne Cooper, the careers guidance officer from the Student Services team visited Life Skills classes at The Maltings to explain how she could support our students on their learning journey. Some students decided to meet with Leanne right away, while for others, it will happen gradually over the year. Leanne will be available to meet with students at The Maltings every month.
This meeting also provided our students with an opportunity to meet Leanne face-to-face, who is one of our safeguarding team members.
Through steadfast support, progress becomes the bridge to achievement!

Judith Williams – AEW Volunteer
"I have always worked in a support role, but due to health problems, I was unable to continue working in the manual capacity essential to my role in care. As a person, I want to help make a difference so wherever possible, I volunteer. Over the years, supporting friends and family has been my main focus. I believe that helping people in any capacity is a massive reward in itself. Thinking about gaining additional skills I picked up a leaflet for the Open Day at Adult Education Wolverhampton (AEW). Initially the intention was to enrol on courses that would give me the skills to pursue a less manual career. However, it also presented the opportunity to enquire about volunteering at the event. On Saturday 24th June I volunteered at Adult Education for the first time. What a great day. I met people from all different walks of like and feel that I have learnt and benefited from the experience. This was my first-time volunteering with the public but it will not be the last.
I believe that we never stop learning, and in supporting others, we share our knowledge and gain from theirs.
Since the Open Day, I have registered to enrol on British Sign Language (BSL) and Digital skills courses and have applied for a position as a Support Worker. Volunteering really does make a difference and it has already started to make a difference for me."

Pre Access / AEW volunteer
"I left school at 16 with very little to show for it. I wasn’t motivated and struggled with my qualifications. After trying a year at college, I decided to skip my education and go straight into work.
At 35 and after trying my hand at a multitude of different jobs I decided it was time to focus and find a long-term career. A friend recommended Adult Education Wolverhampton (AEW) so in September 2022 I enrolled on to a Pre-Access Course, a time in my life where I could start my journey to a career choice and not just another job.
At 35 learning was a completely different experience AEW is a friendly place where I found like-minded people and teachers that taught in a style that motivated me and made me want to learn more. In September, I will be moving onto the Access to Higher Education Diploma in Social Science. I plan to compete another year and hopefully move on to a degree course specialising in psychology.
Not only is AEW giving me the skills to progress but I have also started to volunteer for them at service events. An activity that has helped to build my confidence and given me another completely new work experience."
