Our Fashion and Textiles department is home to BA (hons) Fashion and BA (hons) Textiles and Surface Pattern. Our studios and workshops have seen some exciting work coming to fruition over the past few weeks and we can’t wait to showcase our class of 2021 with a closer look at our specialist areas. What a year it has been but we are still making everyday and proud of what our students have accomplished through the most challenging period of our lifetime.
We have had a busy few weeks in our fashion studios. The universities procedures for safety through the pandemic have meant we have been able to return safely to our studios but at limited capacity this semester. Fantastic to see the creativity flowing and some exciting work evolving across all levels.
Here is a glimpse of what our Fashion students have been working on. We can’t wait to see the final outcomes with hand in coming up this month
Busy first semester for our second year students. Year 2 Advanced Process module is all about taking those technical skills to next level by becoming confident using specialist industrial machinery for a variety of materials whilst developing pattern cutting skills further.
SPORTSWEAR : KNITTED FABRICS
First lot of sweatshirts delivered today by our level 5 fashion students for their formative assessments. Their quick turnaround task was design, develop and manufacture a half scale casual sportswear sweatshirt demonstrating their pattern cutting and manufacturing skills. During these challenging times students had to be resourceful when sourcing materials and ended up up-cycling old sweatshirts!!
As the Fashion and Textiles and Surface Pattern team prepares for a new academic year and our first semester. We look back over the past year to how far we have come and how well our staff and students have adapted to the pandemic.
We have plans for a mixture of face to face and online teaching and our studios and workshops are being organised and prepared for new social distancing rules. The university is prepared and we can’t wait to meet new students and see familiar faces return.
WE GOT THIS
Over the past week we have seen students from our degree and Masters courses submit and/or present work completed during lockdown.
We are so impressed with how our students have adapted to the situation. We are all missing our studios and workshops and looking forward to returning. Some exciting plans for the next academic year with safety at the heart of what we do.
Masters student Hayley Bassett has been exploring our impact on the environment and raises questions about our future. Hayley is using embroidery and manipulating the human form through embellishment. As Hayleys work progresses we should see how the environment in turn impacts on us.
How are you coping with lockdown?
Second year fashion student Manpreet shares her reflections on lockdown and mental health ‘We are facing some challenges during this pandemic. The most challenging part is probably our mental health.
An easy way to take care of/cope with your mental health is journaling.
I have been journaling a lot recently and this can be an amazing way to share your own thoughts with yourself. It helps me with slowing down my thoughts and reflecting on them.
In my journal I write positive affirmations, my feelings, things that happened during the day, things that I do that keep me motivated and things that I’m grateful for. I believe that we should all look at quarantine as a way of unwinding from our usual busy routines. Take advantage of this time to learn more things about yourself, to be patient and to actually enjoy every moment of your life.’
Our staff are working from home sewing scrubs, wash bags and headbands for our key workers.
There are some amazing groups on Facebook sharing patterns, videos on how to make what’s needed. If you have sewing skills please take a look at what you can do locally. Do it safely please follow guidelines.
