We’ve had lots of fun exploring our “Things That Are Special to Me” theme last week🥰

The children’s special items were photographed, laminated and hidden inside jelly for them to find and “rescue”- and it was a BIG hit! 🤭 So much so, we decided to bring the photos back out at our playdough station too, giving the children the chance to recreate and talk about their special things in a different way. ❤️

We also invited some very special guests into the setting… our favourite teddies! 🧸💕 We enjoyed a lovely teddy bears picnic together, sharing food, chatting and having lots of fun with our furry friends. Thank you The Early Years Edit for this lovely activity prompt.

Lots of lovely opportunities for talking, sharing, remembering and celebrating the things that are special to each of us. 🥰

Today our circle time looked a little different… 🤭 Our special and most favourite toys from home were hidden inside our usual “What’s in the bag?!” and the children were SO excited to discover what was inside! 🥰

It was lovely hearing the children talk about their special toys, sharing why they love them, listening to each other and practising taking turns. ❤️

Such a lovely follow-on from our All About Me topic from The Early Years Edit curriculum, celebrating the things that make each of us special. ✨

When we were doing our Home Corner Stories, the hot topic of conversation and role play was definitely Mommy’s, Daddy’s and baby’s! 🥰

So, naturally, we took the opportunity to delve a little deeper into this. The children loved washing and taking care of the baby’s in our new garden home corner, and it even led to washing "Baby Katie's" hair too 🤭🫧

They were so gentle and caring towards our giant baby, giving her lots of cuddles, washing her and making sure she was all looked after.

Although... we may have had a few little spillages... or should I say whole jugs 😳🤭😂of water poured straight over her face and into her lap!

It was lovely to see their caring and nurturing side come out through their play, while also giving us lots to talk about along the way ❤️ The Early Years Edit

Next up was ‘Home Corner Stories’, taken from the Belonging, Beginning & Community framework from The Early Years Edit 🏡

I was really excited for this one, (not that I need an excuse to spend my weekend in the charity shops looking for treasures for the littles 🤔 so off I popped to the charity shops to find some real clothes for our home corner 🤭 And the children absolutely loved it!

It was the perfect excuse to have a little move around in our home corner. We loved having it outside and creating a whole new area for the children to explore, and it really sparked their interest.

The real clothing made such a difference. They loved being able to dress up in “proper” clothes and it seemed to really help their imaginations come to life.

We talked about our own homes and the things we do at home, which led to some lovely role play and lots of little stories from the children about their own experiences. ❤️

And yes… I may have joined in too! 😂

We’re back for the new academic year and excited to be getting stuck back into The Early Years Edit curriculum 🥰

Starting off strong with All About Me, which is always a lovely one to begin with.

We used our mirror tray to look at our faces and talk about our different features, noticing what makes us all the same but also what makes us different.

This then linked nicely into our sensory tray, where the children could explore all the different facial features and have a go at making their own faces. 👀👃🏼👄

Lots of talking, exploring and learning without even realising we were learning! ❤️

Last summer (my first as a childminder) I turned the garden into a pop-up cinema… complete with an 8-man tent, a snack stall and a movie 🍿⛺️

This year, we’ve gone one step further… a full-blown beach and ice cream parlour! 🏖️🍦

I absolutely love taking a more relaxed approach to learning during the summer holidays. Of course there’s still so much learning happening, but my biggest focus is giving my littles and holiday clubbies the kind of summer memories they’ll look back on with a smile.

Now the question is… what on earth am I going to do next year? 🤭💛

If DanDan can’t take us to the beach, DanDan will bring the beach to us… yes, yes I did turn my whole garden into a beach! We had beach sounds playing from our garden speaker, it was a special touch and brought the experience to life.

One of my favourite parts of childminding is creating experiences children might never have had before, while also building on the knowledge and memories they already have. Whether it’s introducing something completely new or bringing a familiar experience to life in a different way, I love seeing their excitement, curiosity and imagination grow.

Of course I took the opportunity to turn yesterday’s activity into a beach… and you can’t go to the beach without visiting the ice cream parlour after 🤭🏖️💦🍦

💦 Pouring and flow station activity from The Early Years Edit- but on an extra large scale💦

We investigated (man-made) rock pools and a stream today…

The children loved being in charge of the water! They spent ages filling containers, carrying water around and pouring it into the different rock pools- each rock pool was its own investigation station, and the children were absorbed in each and every one!

The children quickly realised they needed enough water to help the boats travel down the steam, and enjoyed experimenting with different ways of making them move. They repeated the activity again and again, tweaking their ideas each time and celebrating when their boats made it all the way through.
