Each morning at Little Woodlings Nursery our snack cafe opens for the children. Each day we have two helpers who run the cafe, they enjoy dressing up in aprons (made by Jess' lovely mummy) and chef hats, they turn our sign on, count the children to count out the cups and plates, find the children's picture cards, and help prep our snack. The bell is rung when the children leave the table and a space becomes available. In each bowl of food we have a number card to help the children use their counting skills and number recognition. They even wash and dry their own plate and cup!
This activity not only promotes independence, but many other learning opportunities take place, such as turning taking, managing their own feelings and behaviour while waiting, counting skills, number recognition, hand eye coordination while pouring their own drinks, and decision making. Sometimes even our practitioners get invited to the cafe!
