Yes, I am an online primary tutor but in my lessons, I do not rely on just online resources. I encourage my students to use paper, pencil, colouring pencils, scissors, glue and so much more in my lessons as we do a lot of interactive, craft-based activities.

Why?

I see too many children losing basic skills with being online all the time so instead I encourage them to use these simple resources.

These resources allows children to...

-develop their imagination and creativity

-develop their fine motor control

-talk endlessly and openly

-build relationships and so much more...

Sometimes, you need to be a little bit patient.

On the weekend, I came across some old DVD boxes and wanted to get them working again. With my families help, we did it. However, it took a little bit of time and to be honest, I grew impatient waiting for them to work.

It made me realise that when I was much younger, we had to be a lot more patient.

You couldn't order food and clothes and get it the next day as you needed to wait until the weekend to buy it when you went shopping.

You had to wait to speak to people. You certainly didn't expect instant replies.

If you wanted something new, you waited till your birthday or Christmas.

When you got a new toy, you had to wait for a family member to put it together.

Now, with the way the world is, everything is instant and I don't think that is a good thing especially for children.

I see teachers talk online about students needing constant instruction as they struggle to simply wait.

I see parents talking about their child or children wanting toys now but then as soon as they get them, they aren't interested in the toy and talk about the next thing.

How do you teach your child to be patient and be in the moment?

One thing I have learned in education is that every child learns in a completely different way.

Some children can learn in a step-by-step sequence whereas other children learn so much and then need to recap on prior learning before they move on.

This is why tutoring works so well. I work with students at their pace and nobody elses.

I went shopping on the weekend and fancied buying a magazine for old times sake, to say I was shocked by the price was an understatement especially when I checked how much kids' magazines were.

My tutoring parents are always asking for different reading resource recommendations (which are not on a screen) and I use to suggest magazines but I had no clue how expensive they were until now.

Here are some cheaper alternatives-

-You can bulk buy different magazines for children on Ebay and Vinted which are relatively cheap.

-You can borrow from family and friends and even start up a reading club together.

-You can obviously go to the library and borrow books and magazines.

As it is the start of a new school term and year, I thought I would reintroduce myself...

I have worked in education for many years in a variety of different roles such as teaching assistant and primary school teacher.

I left permanent teaching to go on supply in 2021 and also, started tutoring.

When I initially started tutoring, I worked with children in their homes and met some wonderful families.

I gradually moved to online tutoring which I absolutely love now as I get to teach children all over the world.

I have and continue to teach Phonics, Maths, English and Topic with children in China, India, Menorca, etc...

When I am not tutoring, I go line dancing, sing in a choir and try to read as much as I can!
