Our toddlers have enjoyed mirror painting this week! Making marks is an important pre-requisite to writing, developing hand eye co-ordination and refining fine motor skills. Providing mirrors to paint on gives a whole new dimension and outlook, making the activity engaging and exciting. Mark making is more than just pencils and paper!

Our whole staff team recently attended training from Early Years Leadership on working with children aged under 2. During this training, they extended their knowledge on neuro science and early brain development and reflected on how our environment might be enhanced to further support our youngest children. They developed their knowledge on attachment theory and considered how our enquiry led approach supports strong attachments, resulting in confident and capable young children. Throughout the training they learned new and exciting ways to encourage babies to grow and learn through sensory experiences and reflected on the ways in which the first 1001 days of a child's life sets the foundation for lifelong learning.

Learning about London!

As part of our Queen's Jubilee celebrations, children have been learning about London Landmarks.
Today we set them a challenge to build some of the landmarks from the wooden blocks. We had some brilliant interpretations of the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace and Big Ben!

Why We Love Hats!

We know how much children enjoy dressing up and our hat table is a firm favourite at the moment! Trying on hats is more than just play, there are social and emotional benefits to hat play too!

Dressing up is a form of imaginative play — and imaginative play boosts problem-solving and self-regulation skills. Children create situations and scenes and act out social events. They’re able to test out new ideas and behaviours in a comfortable environment.

Dress-up encourages creative thinking and communication skills. It also helps children practice language development and their social skills. Playing with another child or adult requires teamwork, cooperation, and sharing.

The act of putting on and taking off hats has physical benefits. Some hats are plastic, some straw, some cotton, all having different weights, textures and ways to put them on. Some have fastenings, , clips or straps, which encourage the development of fine motor skills.

When our children pop themselves in front of the mirror and try on the different hats, they explore and engage their imagination, trying out new identities, occupations and personas.

During this play, our practitioners ask questions about the characters or personas they’ve created, encouraging children to talk through their play and helping them to build conversational skills.

Why not dig out some hats at home and enjoy role playing with your little one?

Following on from our children's love of the tent, we decided to build our own den. The children made suggestions on what we needed and how to construct the den, trying new ways to make their very own hiding place to play!

This morning we used gentle hands to explore a real birds egg that had been found and bought in for us to see. We talked about what may have happened, what might be inside, and used our bird books to try to match the egg and identify the bird.

This little invitation to explore is set up ready for our babies on Monday! Using natural materials in play (referred to as Heauristic play) stimulates babies senses in a different way to plastic or light up toys. This engages babies brains in a way that stimulates and builds brain synapses and connections, supporting all round development.
This is an activity that is so easy to do at home too. Create a treasure basket with wooden spoons, metal implements, bangles, sponges, etc and allow you baby to explore!

Many of our younger children have been enjoying 'sorting' activities, and so we will have set up this lovely invitation to sort by colour. The children will not only be learning different colours names, but also use hand eye coordination to move and sort the bricks. Note there are no chairs at this activity... the lack of chairs encourages the children to stand at the the activity, developing core strength and gross motor skills while playing!

Our preschool children have been showing interest in numbers so we will be continuing to nurture this line of enquiry next week. We will be looking at numbers in the environment and different ways numbers are used, such as in measurement, on dice, on dominoes and playing cards. When we provide opportunities to play with mathematical concepts, children develop confidence in number and understand that numbers have meaning.

Today we explored a range of vegetables. The children used their senses to taste, observe, feel and smell the vegetables, using new language and vocabulary. They discussed the differences when cut, for example, the cauliflower created florets, the onion had layers and the pepper had seeds. They described the foods they liked and disliked and the food they ate at home. They then got their creativity going by printing with the cut vegetables.

Our self serve breakfast bar is always a firm favorite!
This morning we have weetabix, malt loaf and apple slices. The children make their own choices for breakfast, pour their own milk and water and enjoy a morning chat with their friends!
