Wollaston & Strixton Pre-School

Wollaston & Strixton Pre-School A community Pre-School offering learning through play for children aged 2 years to 4 year. Wollaston & Strixton Pre-School was established in 1966.

We are a community Pre-School which is run by a Voluntary Management Committee of elected parents / carers. In March 2011 we were delighted to move our Pre-School into the new WAY building, located in the grounds of Wollaston Community Primary School. The WAY building was purpose built with our small children in mind and we now offer excellent modern facilities for play and learning during our Pre

-School sessions. We also have direct access to our own secure garden space for β€˜free flow’ play outside. The children will benefit from being located within the Primary School site as many of them will continue their education at the Primary School when they reach the appropriate age. The school is no longer a scary place with lots of bigger children but a place they are comfortable and secure in. The advantages of having the use of the playground and a wonderful sectioned off garden (just for the Preschool) are numerous for the children and can only serve to further add to their education and learning experience. We have an excellent rapport with the local community and the Head Teacher of the primary school, who has shown enormous support and is dedicated to continuing links between the two establishments. We provide a friendly and caring environment in which we strive to meet the individual needs of the children. Our session planning is driven by the interests and needs of the children so as to make learning fun but at the same time challenging. Besides helping children to work towards the Early Years Foundation Stage, we also place great emphasis on developing the self esteem, confidence, language and communication skills of the children. We encourage parents / carers to be involved with their children’s early education through inviting them to attend sessions and help with activities. Please talk to a member of staff if you would like to attend any session.

Today we have been enjoying lots of conversations about football, so with the FIFA World Cup having started, we decided to organise a sweepstake with our Friday children.

Each child chose a team and then matched it to our sweepstake sheet. Some children needed more support than others to recognise team names, find their country, and match it correctly.

Over the coming weeks, we will watch highlights together, look at the scores, discuss how the teams are doing, and track their progress through the tournament.

What is my child learning from this?

**Communication and Language**

* Talking about football, teams, countries, and match results.
* Listening to others' ideas and answering questions.
* Learning and using new vocabulary linked to sport and countries.

**Mathematics**

* Recognising and comparing numbers in scores.
* Counting goals and points.
* Using mathematical language such as more than, fewer than, highest, lowest, and equal.

**Understanding the World**

* Learning about different countries, flags, and cultures.
* Looking at where countries are on a map.
* Understanding that people around the world enjoy different sports and celebrations.

**Personal, Social and Emotional Development**

* Making independent choices when selecting a team.
* Taking turns and respecting the choices of others.
* Learning resilience by understanding that teams can win, lose, or draw.

**Literacy**

* Recognising and matching country names.
* Identifying letters and familiar words.
* Developing early reading skills through meaningful, real-life experiences.

We are looking forward to following the tournament together and finding out which team wins our sweepstake!
