Woldingham is getting busier – and buzzier - day by day as we head towards the start of another academic year. Today, as well as welcoming our new and returning boarders and many of their parents, our astro and netball courts have been thronged by students for preseason hockey and netball.

Very excitingly for our netballers, Commonwealth Games silver medallist Rhea Dixon has joined today’s training sessions. Rhea was part of the Jamaica squad which achieved the history-making defeat of Australia in the semi-final, before going on to play New Zealand in the final. Training with Rhea – whose silver medal came to Woldingham too – is fantastic inspiration for the sporting year ahead.

We’re very much looking forward to seeing our hockey players for preseason training tomorrow and Friday, as well as next Tuesday, when they will be joined by our netballers.

We’re sure many of you have enjoyed plenty of sport during the summer holidays. Head of Netball Miss Magee certainly has, having played for Northern Ireland at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, and she’s looking forward to sharing the lessons, experience and inspiration from an amazing competition with students.

Woldingham students are celebrating excellent A Level and GSCE results this summer. Half of all grades awarded at A Level were A*/A, almost a quarter of our Upper Sixth achieved a clean sweep of A*/A grades, and over 90% of students secured their first or second choice university place.

At GCSE, over 60% of all grades were 9-7 and half of English Literature grades achieved by the whole year group were either 9 or 8. Woldingham Art students are celebrating success at both A Level and GCSE with a full house of A*s for A Level and 84% of GCSE grades at 9 or 8.

Once again, our students have demonstrated success across the board epitomising the strengths and opportunities Woldingham offers across STEM, humanities and the creative arts. Congratulations to our Year 11 students, who are celebrating excellent GCSE results today.

Results in English, Geography, Computer Science, Art, Design Technology and Music were particularly impressive. As at A Level, Art results were superb with 84% of grades 9 or 8 and almost half of English Literature grades achieved by the whole year group were either 9 or 8. More than 80% of Music and Computer Science results, three quarters of grades for Geography and over 70% of grades for Design Technology and History were 9–7.

Once again, we are delighted with their ‘value added’ scores with students achieving an overall average of more than half a grade higher than predicted.

There were some excellent individual results with four students achieving nine or more GCSEs at grade 9 or 8. Our small cohort of one-year GCSE students performed extremely well with Icing achieving four grade 9s and Annie three grade 9s in just one year at Woldingham.

With the vast majority continuing their educational journey here at Woldingham, these students have much to look forward to as our new Lower Sixth in September. Huge congratulations to our Upper Sixth on today’s excellent set of A Level results. Half of all grades were A*/A and over 80% A*-B. These superb results are taking them to top universities in the UK and overseas, where the subjects they will study range from medicine, engineering, economics, psychology and chemistry to politics, history, sports science, modern foreign languages and fine art. The most popular universities this year were Durham, Bristol, Newcastle, Exeter, Manchester, Edinburgh and UCL; though our students are heading far and wide, including to US and European universities. We are also celebrating a place on the Goldman Sachs degree apprenticeship course, as well as excellent EPQ results.

We're pleased to hear from Mrs Woolaway that our Lower Sixth have been enjoying some good walking weather on their Gold DofE qualifying expedition in the Brecon Beacons. Yesterday saw them hike up (and down) Fan y Big and today, Pen y Fan.

The girls have a night's camping in a sheep field to look forward to (we're not sure whether the sheep are also using it at present) before an early start tomorrow for the final leg of their expedition.

Today’s Speech Day was a wonderful celebration of students’ impressive academic and co-curricular achievements, as well as their many and varied contributions to our community.

In the Head’s address, Mrs Baillie reflected on another fantastic year full of successes and looked ahead to an exciting future with Woldingham in the vanguard of developments in female education.

Our inspiring guest speaker, humanitarian and human rights advocate (and former Woldingham Head Girl) Isabel Basile, advised our Upper Sixth leavers to navigate life ahead, which will be full of both beauty and challenge, by following their passions, staying true to their principles and having the courage to act on both.

In her entertaining and very emotional speech, Waishe, Head Girl 2025-2026, explained that Woldingham has helped the Upper Sixth “grow into ourselves and become people we can be proud of.”

We, too, are very proud of our Upper Sixth leavers and wish them all the very best for the future.
