πŸŽ‰ Congratulations to Toby on achieving a Grade 5 in GCSE Maths at Surrey Adult Learning!

Toby, aged 20, is celebrating a fantastic achievement after studying face-to-face at our Guildford Centre.

He says the smaller class sizes and personalised support made all the difference: "It was easier with a smaller class. I got more one-to-one time with the tutor. She was really good and I got the hang of it." Toby also received extra time in the exam due to autism, which he found reassuring: "It helped me focus."

School was not the right environment for Toby, but returning to learning as an adult has been a turning point. "You've got to start somewhere," he says.

Now feeling confident and motivated, Toby plans to work towards GCSE English next before starting his job search.

Toby's mum, Laura, said:

"I am so proud of what Toby has achieved. Secondary school was really difficult for him, but gaining his GCSE has always been his main goal. Surrey Adult Learning has been incredible from day one, always supportive of Toby's needs and consistently going the extra mile.

I would highly recommend Surrey Adult Learning to anyone who did not get the chance at school. I always knew Toby could do it, but mainstream schools simply do not have the funding or resources to give every child the support they need. The tutor was amazing, clear, instructive and completely in tune with him. Having that focused time made all the difference.

There is no way he could have achieved this in a mainstream setting. We are absolutely over the moon."

Well done, Toby. We are incredibly proud of your hard work, determination and achievement. πŸ‘

🌟 Tutor Spotlight: Stathis Dimitriadis 🌟

Meet Stathis, one of our talented Pottery and Claywork tutors.

Stathis has worked as a studio ceramicist since 2008, after moving to London from Greece, where he trained through a pottery apprenticeship. He later completed further ceramics courses and a Master of Arts in Fine Arts.

Since 2019, Stathis has shared his experience and passion for ceramics through teaching. His work has been exhibited across the United Kingdom and internationally, and he is a member of the Royal Society of Sculptors, The London Group and London Potters.

Stathis’ courses are practical, creative and supportive. Learners explore different projects inspired by ceramic pieces, museum collections, gallery images and videos of craftspeople at work. After watching live demonstrations and learning about design principles and techniques, each learner creates their own interpretation.

Projects can include functional pieces, such as mugs, or decorative work, such as textured wall tiles. Learners experiment with different clays, textures, decorations and glazes, while receiving individual guidance throughout the process.

The group also shares ideas, discoveries and experiences, creating a welcoming atmosphere where learners can build confidence, develop friendships and support one another.

πŸ’¬ One learner said:

β€œNever thought that I would be able to make something that I would be proud of.”

πŸ’¬Another shared:

β€œYou inspired me to find my calling in ceramics.”

Stathis believes that everybody is creative. Clay offers a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with creativity, improve sensory awareness and motor skills, and bring ideas to life through beautiful and useful objects.

As Stathis says:

β€œYou will fall in love with clay after the first lesson!”
