Let's Talk Parenting: Unlocking "Tantrums" and Challenging Behaviours Workshop.
This workshop will be held while the children are having their bilingual classes on Saturday 27th May 10:30 - 12:00. Parents are welcome to bring young children to the session if they wish (baby/ toddlers).
The workshop is free of charge, however, donations are welcome to cover costs.
We intend to cover the content in 1h and leave 30 min for questions.

Susan is the head of multilingualism in an international school and has lots of experience in the field. She has lived and worked in South Africa, Thailand, the UAE, Belgium, Oman, Sweden and the UK, and has raised two bilingual children. As a lifelong learner of languages, she speaks, to varying degrees, English, French, Dutch, German, Afrikaans, Swedish, Arabic and BSL. Susan has a particular interest in language policy as a driving force in promoting multilingualism within families, schools and on a national level. Susan has a Bachelor of Arts in French and Linguistics (University of South Africa) and a Master’s in Linguistics & Communication (Birkbeck College, University of London).
The workshop is free for the Saturday language school parents but a contribution of £1/£2 is kindly requested.

La vera storia della Befana
In un villaggio, non molto distante da Betlemme, viveva una giovane donna che si chiamava Befana. Non era br**ta, anzi, era molto bella e aveva parecchi pretendenti.. Però aveva un pessimo caratteraccio. Era sempre pronta a criticare e a parlare male del prossimo. Cosicché non si era mai sposata, o perché non le andava bene l’uomo che di volta in volta le chiedeva di diventare sua moglie, o perché l’innamorato, dopo averla conosciuta meglio, si ritirava immediatamente. Era, infatti, molto egoista e fin da piccola non aveva mai aiutato nessuno. Era, inoltre, come ossessionata dalla pulizia. Aveva sempre in mano la scopa, e la usava così rapidamente che sembrava ci volasse sopra. La sua solitudine, man mano che passavano gli anni, la rendeva sempre più acida e cattiva, tanto che in paese avevano cominciato a soprannominarla “la strega”. Lei si arrabbiava moltissimo e diceva un sacco di parolacce. Nessuno in paese ricordava di averla mai vista sorridere. Quando non puliva la casa con la sua scopa di paglia, si sedeva e faceva la calza. Ne faceva a centinaia. Non per qualcuno, naturalmente! Le faceva per se stessa, per calmare i nervi e passare un po’ di tempo visto che nessuno del villaggio veniva mai a trovarla, né lei sarebbe mai andata a trovare nessuno. Era troppo orgogliosa per ammettere di avere bisogno di un po’ di amore ed era troppo egoista per donare un po’ del suo amore a qualcuno. E poi non si fidava di nessuno. Così passarono gli anni e la nostra Befana, a forza di essere cattiva, divenne anche br**ta e sempre più odiata da tutti. Più lei si sentiva odiata da tutti, più diventava cattiva e br**ta.
Aveva da poco compiuto settant’anni, quando una carovana giunse nel paese dove abitava. C’erano tanti cammelli e tante persone, più persone di quante ce ne fossero nell’intero villaggio. Curiosa com’era vide subito che c’erano tre uomini vestiti sontuosamente e, origliando, seppe che erano dei re. Re Magi, li chiamavano. Venivano dal lontano oriente, e si erano accampati nel villaggio per far riposare i cammelli e passare la notte prima di riprendere il viaggio verso Betlemme. Era la sera prima del sei gennaio. Borbottando e brontolando come al solito sulla stupidità della gente che viaggia in mezzo al deserto e disturba invece di starsene a casa sua, si era messa a fare la calza quando sentì bussare alla porta. Lo stomaco si strinse e un brivido le corse lungo la schiena. Chi poteva essere? Nessuno aveva mai bussato alla sua porta. Più per curiosità che per altro andò ad aprire. Si trovò davanti uno di quei re. Era molto bello e le fece un gran sorriso, mentre diceva: “Buonasera signora, posso entrare?”. Befana rimase come paralizzata, sorpresa da questa imprevedibile situazione e, non sapendo cosa fare, le scapparono alcune parole dalla bocca prima ancora che potesse ragionare: “Prego, si accomodi”. Il re le chiese gentilmente di poter dormire in casa sua per quella notte e Befana non ebbe né la forza né il coraggio di dirgli di no. Quell’uomo era così educato e gentile con lei che si dimenticò per un attimo del suo caratteraccio, e perfino si offrì di fargli qualcosa da mangiare. Il re le parlò del motivo per cui si erano messi in viaggio. Andavano a trovare il bambino che avrebbe salvato il mondo dall’egoismo e dalla morte. Gli portavano in dono oro, incenso e mirra. “Vuol ve**re anche lei con noi?”. “Io?!” rispose Befana.. “No, no, non posso”. In realtà poteva ma non voleva. Non si era mai allontanata da casa. Tuttavia era contenta che il re glielo avesse chiesto. “Vuole che portiamo al Salvatore un dono anche da parte sua?”. Questa poi… Lei regalare qualcosa a qualcuno, per di più sconosciuto. Però le sembrò di fare troppo br**ta figura a dire ancora di no. E durante la notte mise una delle sue calze, una sola, dove dormiva il re magio, con un biglietto: “per Gesù”. La mattina, all’alba, finse di essere ancora addormentata e aspettò che il re magio uscisse per riprendere il suo viaggio. Era già troppo in imbarazzo per sostenere un’altra, seppur breve, conversazione. Passarono trent’anni. Befana ne aveva appena compiuti cento. Era sempre sola, ma non più cattiva. Quella visita inaspettata, la sera prima del sei gennaio, l’aveva profondamente cambiata. Anche la gente del villaggio nel frattempo aveva cominciato a bussare alla sua porta. Dapprima per sapere cosa le avesse detto il re, poi pian piano per aiutarla a fare da mangiare e a pulire casa, visto che lei aveva un tale mal di schiena che quasi non si muoveva più. E a ciascuno che veniva, Befana cominciò a regalare una calza. Erano belle le sue calze, erano fatte bene, erano calde. Befana aveva cominciato anche a sorridere quando ne regalava una, e perciò non era più così br**ta, era diventata perfino simpatica. Nel frattempo dalla Galilea giungevano notizie di un certo Gesù di Nazareth, nato a Betlemme trent’anni prima, che compiva ogni genere di miracoli. Dicevano che era lui il Messia, il Salvatore. Befana capì che si trattava di quel bambino che lei non ebbe il coraggio di andare a trovare. Ogni notte, al ricordo di quella notte, il suo cuore piangeva di vergogna per il misero dono che aveva fatto portare a Gesù dal re magio: una calza vuota… una calza sola, neanche un paio! Piangeva di rimorso e di pentimento, ma questo pianto la rendeva sempre più amabile e buona. Poi giunse la notizia che Gesù era stato ucciso e che era risorto dopo tre giorni. Befana aveva allora centoetre anni. Pregava e piangeva tutte le notti, chiedendo perdono a Gesù. Desiderava più di ogni altra cosa rimediare in qualche modo al suo egoismo e alla sua cattiveria di un tempo. Desiderava tanto un’altra possibilità ma si rendeva conto che ormai era troppo tardi. Una notte Gesù risorto le apparve in sogno e le disse: “Coraggio Befana! Io ti perdono. Ti darò vita e salute ancora per molti anni. Il regalo che tu non sei venuta a portarmi quando ero bambino ora lo porterai a tutti i bambini da parte mia. Volerai da ogni capo all’altro della terra sulla tua scopa di paglia e porterai una calza piena di caramelle e di regali ad ogni bambino che a Natale avrà fatto il presepio e che, il sei gennaio, avrà messo i re magi nel presepio. Ma mi raccomando! Che il bambino sia stato anche buono, non egoista… altrimenti gli metterai del carbone dentro la calza sperando che l’anno dopo si comporti da bambino generoso”. E la Befana fece così e così ancora sta facendo per obbedire a Gesù. Durante tutto l’anno, piena di indicibile gioia, fa le calze per i bambini… ed il sei gennaio gliele porta piene di caramelle e di doni. È talmente felice che, anche il carbone, quando lo mette, è diventato dolce e buono da mangiare.
