Vietnam 🇻🇳 — Part 2

Then… the overnight train to Da Nang! 🚂

Honestly, I loved it. Great snacks, lovely clean linen and I actually SLEPT.

Our accommodation continued to be a bit of a lucky dip. 😂 The winner in Da Nang was the one that provided hand towels AND face cloths as our bath towels. We donated the face cloths to Mr Art House.

Our toilet was also along the balcony from our bedroom, accessed via a communal staircase. So every midnight toilet trip involved trying not to trip over one of the resident cats. 🐈

BUT… the coffee shop downstairs made THE BEST coffee. I’m going to have to wean myself off egg coffees and coconut coffee when I get home. ☕️

We did a day trip to Hoi An, which I’m glad we didn’t stay in. I’d spent ages researching it and had my heart set on staying there and getting clothes made.

Turns out I much preferred Da Nang.

Less touristy, a local coffee shop downstairs, wandering around our neighbourhood and watching everyday life happen.

We also did a cooking course with the family. We went to the market, shopped for ingredients, made salt coffee (sooo good!) and ate SO much food. Lovely to meet other travellers from Australia too. All younger than us 😆

It was also my chance to quiz our local Vietnamese chef and get the lowdown on life in Vietnam.

And then there was Dragon Bridge… which breathes FIRE and sprays WATER every weekend. 🐉🔥💦

So cool!

Vietnam has definitely been full of surprises so far — some planned, most completely accidental. 😂

Vietnam 🇻🇳 — Part 1

We arrived in Hanoi on a ridiculously hot and humid evening, with 4 weeks of travelling ahead of us and a budget to stick to. So our accommodation was… varied. 😂 The plan was always to save the nice beach resort for the final few days!

Our Hanoi homestay was an experience. We basically walked into someone’s dining room, sent the kids off to do our laundry on one of the floors and my son got a welcome hug from a random little kid. 😂

Then came the scooters. SO. MANY. SCOOTERS. 🛵

We learnt a few hand gestures to help slow down traffic, picked up some Vietnamese greetings and eventually got our heads around paying for things in 100,000 and even 1 MILLION d**g. 💸

We experienced the famous Train Street, which was actually pretty cool — sitting centimetres from a train travelling at full speed! My son put a bottle top on the track and it came out completely melted and flattened. Another excuse to sit down for a coffee. ☕️

We deliberately didn’t book everything before leaving the UK. We knew we weren’t travelling in the best weather season, so wanted to see what the weather was doing and decide as we went.

Best decision ever.

We swapped the expensive 2-night Ha Long Bay cruise for a day trip — and just as well, because a storm rolled in as we were leaving.

Ha Long Bay has 1,969 limestone islands and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was absolutely stunning and felt a little bit magical.

We also somehow ended up speaking A LOT of Afrikaans. The kids had been taking the mickey out of us, so we taught them a few words and then started communicating in a strange mixture of very broken Gujarati and Afrikaans. 😂

Very useful when you need to quietly tell the kids what that lady is wearing or what shoes that bloke has on. 🤫

Next stop: Ninh Binh.

A Grab driver convinced us to stay in Tam Coc and I’m SO glad we listened. We kayaked through caves, ducked under rocks, explored 13th-century Buddhist temples and generally had a brilliant couple of days.

Then… the overnight train to Da Nang! 🚂

Hello!! 👋🏼

I’ve been a bit quiet on the grid because I’ve been off on holiday with my family for almost 4 weeks! And we’ve finally made it to the tail end of our trip… Phu Quoc, Vietnam. 🌴🇻🇳

We started our adventure in Kuala Lumpur at the beginning of August, then headed to Penang.

We explored an elephant sanctuary, climbed the 272 steps at Batu Caves, and did a helluva hike through the Penang jungle in humidity I have never experienced before. Honestly, hotter than my hot yoga classes! 🥵😂 All to see teeny tiny turtles 🐢 at a turtle rescue centre… followed by a speedboat ride which was very much needed to dry off the sweat 😆

The food in Malaysia was just delicious. Such strong, distinct flavours and I am now fully on board with Nasi Lemak for breakfast. Rice, curry and an egg? Yes please.

One of my favourite parts of KL was Kampung Baru. Seeing the original houses built in the 1800’s with skyscrapers towering behind them was such a contrast. The people there make some of the best food too! We also ate in a food hall packed with locals, which is always a good sign. Everyone was so warm and friendly.

George Town was brilliant too. Great graffiti, plenty of Instagrammable spots and lots of fun collecting stamps from different shops. Mostly though, we just wandered around with absolutely no agenda… my favourite way to explore a place.

Next stop… Hanoi, Vietnam 🇻🇳

And that’s a wrap on summer! ☀️🎨

What a brilliant few weeks it’s been. I’ve loved meeting so many new faces, was completely chuffed to be called the GOAT 🐐 by one of my student’s (I’ll happily take that! 😂).

This summer has been a little shorter than usual because we’re off on a four-week family adventure to Malaysia and Vietnam. It’s the first time I’ve ever closed the studio for this long.

Don’t worry—we’ll make up for lost art time with plenty of creating over October half term!

Have a fantastic rest of the holidays! I may pop on occasionally with a few photos from our trip, but I’m hoping to swap screen time for family time and disappear from my phone for a while.

Today at Art Camp we mixed things up a little! 🎨

We explored relief painting, created colourful sunset paintings, and got stuck into clay relief sculptures. So much painting, making and creating all in one day!

It was a brilliant 5 hours, and it was lovely to welcome so many new faces too. Thanks to everyone who came along – can’t wait to do it all again! 😊

Kay’s Paint & Sculpt class got stuck into painting and clay, and the finished pieces turned out brilliantly. I love how each one has its own little personality!

Five busy (and very fun!) hours of art today! 🎨

We explored palette knife painting, paper sculpture and clay sculpture. The biggest excitement? Realising just how much clay they were allowed to use! 😄

I love teaching animal-themed projects because there’s so much room for imagination. It’s always fascinating to see where each child’s ideas take them and how differently they all interpret the same theme.

Tania’s been busy running our Summer Craft Classes over the last couple of weeks, and the studio has been full of sewing, making and creating! ✂️🎨

It’s been wonderful to see so many children keeping their hands busy, learning new skills and getting creative over the summer holidays.
