The Art House

This evening a lovely couple celebrated a birthday! 🎉 at The Art House. They were inspired by an artwork that was created last week in the studio. I love how they say in the beginning, ‘I don’t know anything about art’. Towards the end of the session they are very decisive on where the swirls should go and where needs more pink and definitely no more black. Ones eye definitely can adapt to abstraction. It’s also not as easy as it looks. Such fun! They were very happy with the results. Can’t wait to get it back to them.

Really interesting trying to understand what is inside our tweens heads and then translating it into a painting. Gaming/ Prime theme today!

A Little Artists class dedicated to Sonic the Hedgehog. We made clay hedgehog pencil holders and speedy spinners (also threw in some sciencey stuff about the Newton disc)

Art Camp this morning. We made clay whales, wave paintings and pastel seahorses. Why does it always seem to rain on Art Camp days ☔️🙄

I took the kids (and our doggy 🐾) to Greenwich this week to see the Painted Hall (by Sir James Thornhill) at the Royal Naval College. It was incredible!!
The building was designed by the same architect who designed St Paul’s Cathedral (Sir Christopher Wren). We lay on our backs mesmerising over the story created above us and admiring the 200 figures depicted. It took 19 years to paint! There’s a fascinating story of King George I who has his mistresses painted on one of the walls and adjacent to that is a very grand painting with his banished wife’s ghostly hand under the carpet. She was in love with her childhood sweetheart, the Count of Sweden and planned to be with him. She was caught and locked away for the last 30 years of her life. Her ghostly hand can be seen as if she was swept under the carpet and forgotten.
Ruins of the palace where King George VIII was born is beneath the Painted Hall too.

What a fantastic tween/teen Gaming 👾 inspired class! Great paintings guys. Wow! amazed how kids never seem to tire from talking about minecraft 😆It was a great ice breaker too with a group who don’t know each other. There are spaces for this class on the 18 Aug and spaces for Yayoi Kusama inspired mushrooms 🍄 on the 25 Aug.

So wonderful to see how proud this little student was today. She redeemed a gift voucher gifted to her from her grandmother. Beautiful painting!

Great crocheting 🧶 in the studio today! The class mastered the foundation chain and not one but TWO types of crochet stitches… results? Twisty wind spinners!

In todays Art Camp for 7-11 year olds we had an ocean theme, making a clay whale, painting a wave and drawing a pastel seahorse - the kids had chalk pastel everywhere! Thanks to Michael for helping me out!

Great work this afternoon in our Paint and Sculpt class for 6-11 year olds, with their watercolour jungle paintings and clay tiger head sculptures!

This evening an adult student came to do a painting for his wife. He’s driving to Dorset tomorrow morning to surprise her with the painting for their anniversary. Glad we managed to get it done! 🙌🏼

The Summer Holiday classes kicked off with a 5 hour Sculpture Camp today! 🐠🐡🐢🎨 such fun!
The plan was to start with plaster so it would dry and then we could paint. It then rained! So, we had to make a plan and paint them anyway. Got to love this weather 🤪

This evening a couple celebrated their wedding anniversary at The Art House. It was a complete surprise to her husband and it was wonderful to see how they created this gorgeous artwork together! This week I met a new adult student who went completely out of her comfort zone. She wanted to explore palette knife painting! It was wonderful to watch the transformation from how reluctant to relaxed she became. Then loved it so much she’s booking to come again. ☺️

When you’re on school holiday and want to do art with your best mate. What a great idea to come to the studio for a play date bespoke art class. Such a pleasure teaching these girls today!

I had a wonderful long weekend filled with adrenaline (I did the fastest zip line in the world and so did my kids!). Ate until I couldn’t move and laughing until past midnight. A wonderful weekend with family (14 of us!) for a Summer💨🌧️☁️ holiday.
The smallest house in Britain was fun to view. It’s tiny! and the last person who lived there was 6 foot tall. When driving along The Great Orme it reminded me of Chapman’s Peak in Cape Town, & Llandudno too.
Right, summer holiday done! (Not sure where the sun went). Gearing up for 5 weeks of classes. Whoo!
Also, learnt how to change colour crocheting and managed to make loads of squares. I’m no expert! That’s why Kay runs those classes. 😉

The Titanic has been of interest to my 7 year old homeschooled student recently. I didn’t make any mention of the recent submersible. I didn’t think it was a appropriate to a young student. He wanted to include the lifeboats but decided he didn’t want to show the fire on the ship.

Will miss my ladies at Moors Nook on Mondays (back again there in September!). Look how wonderful Margaret’s Kingfisher turned out. 🙌🏼👏🏼

Last day for my Monday 9am adults. We had a younger student joining his mum for the class this morning too. We’ll be restarting classes on the 11 September. So get in touch if you fancy coming along. Have a lovely summer!
