RELEASE 3 EMERGENCY! 🚨

When we miss the green in position Z, we often need a shot that stops as quickly as possible whilst clearing hazards... welcome to !
KEY SETUP AND SWING BASICS 🔑
To play this shot successfully, we need to perfect our basics. For the lob shot, these are:
1️⃣ Stand wider with lower hands
2️⃣ Keep 70% of your weight on the lead side
3️⃣ Keep the loft open in the backswing, by making sure the club face looks at your face

Backswing length ❗️

When we’re trying to hit a softer shot, it’s hard to do so from a short backswing. The reason? When our backswing is short, we need to increase the speed and shaft lean into impact to get the ball to travel the right distance. This creates a hot ball speed that skids forwards when it lands on the green.

Whilst this absolutely is a shot to play, it’s not always the right option, particularly if we want a soft first bounce. It can be better to take a longer backswing and swing slower and smoother through to impact. In Rick’s case, this also helped with improved strike and direction.

Just watch the before and after of to see this in action!

A brilliant stay at The Grove ⛳️

I recently spent some time at , which is fast becoming one of my favourite stops in the UK. From a great day on the golf course, including an eagle chip-in, to an incredible experience at The Kingdom for a fitting, The Grove really delivered.

The hotel was every bit as impressive, from the beautiful rooms and views to an unforgettable meal at The Glasshouse — quite possibly the best buffet I’ve ever experienced!

And with so much for the whole family to enjoy, from archery and axe throwing to cycling and plenty more, it was the perfect combination of golf, relaxation, great food and family time.

Thank you, The Grove, for a wonderful stay. We’ll definitely be back soon.

The Machrie! ⬇️

We flew to the Hebridean island of Islay to visit The Machrie, somewhere I’d heard a lot about, and it certainly didn’t disappoint.

From the incredible rooms and views across the course to the fantastic breakfast, the hotel and clubhouse were the perfect base for exploring this beautiful part of the world.

The golf course itself is a classic links that’s firm, fast and requires plenty of creativity, particularly around the greens. With incredible views throughout and holes that hug the coastline, it’s a truly special place to play.

After golf, there was time for a sauna and cold plunge before an incredible lobster dinner, followed by a spectacular sunset to finish the day.

A wonderful stay at The Machrie. What a place! 🌅

SOFT LANDING SHOT 🔥

When we miss the green, we sometimes find ourselves in a position with less green to work with. In this scenario, we need a mid-flighted shot that lands softly with control… this is the perfect time for a shot!

RELEASE 2 BASICS
Here are a few key basics to play this shot:
(1) Use a 52-58 degree
(2) Slightly open the face (optional)
(3) Rotate full through to the target

This is a silky shot and one that everyone should put into their arsenal. For more guidance on how to play this, head to the 3 Releases book, page 19.

Connection 🔐

In the short game, it’s so important for our triceps and upper body to be in sync with one another. If our body races ahead of our arms, or the other way around, it’s easy to lose control of the club head.

IMPROVEMENTS:
To improve on this, we worked on swinging the club in a straight line (a straighter club path towards the target) and keeping our right arm attached to the body. This prevents any disconnection between the arms and chest

( MANAGING SLOPES ) Ball above feet

When chipping around the greens from uneven lies, we often only need to make a few key changes in order to strike the ball well. In this scenario, we’re playing to a pin 10 yards away, where the ball is above our feet and there is a downslope sever downslope to the pin…
SET-UP AND SWING CHANGES 🧠
If you find yourself in this position, here are the changes you should make:
1️⃣ Drop your trail foot back slightly
2️⃣ Stand slightly further from the ball
3️⃣ Feel like you play a slight draw shot

( Distance Control ) My Favourite Drill 🚀

Every few weeks, I spend some time checking my ability to control distance. If you’ve got just 15 minutes to practice, here’s the routine you should follow!
PRACTICE ROUTINE
Place four cones between yourself and the pin on a simple chip shot, at 25%, 33%, 50%, and 75% of the way to the pin. Then, practice hitting chip & run shots with the following clubs:

1️⃣ 7 iron to cone one (25% carry)
2️⃣ 9 iron to cone two (33% carry)
3️⃣ Gap wedge to cone three (50% carry)
4️⃣ 60° wedge to cone four (75% carry)
In just a few minutes, you’ll develop an amazing feel for how much each club rolls out towards the pin. Head over to my YouTube channel to watch the full video!

PITCH SHOTS 🎯

The first thing you must do when playing a short game shot is read the lie, especially at , where the rough is thick and we need to deal with slopes around the green.

In this video, I used my stock shot, which produces a mid-flighted, softer-landing shot.

For more details on this shot, refer to The 3 Releases, page 78, or check out the ‘Pitching’ topic in The 3 Releases: Online School.
