Can you spot the toad?! 🐸

Did you know toads bury themselves in the ground? One of our forest schoolers found a toad when bug hunting today!

Here’s a little research I found out about them:

Toads use their strong, stubby hind legs—often equipped with hardened growths called spades—to kick dirt backward and sink completely beneath the surface. The main reasons for this natural behavior include:

☀️ Temperature Regulation: Toads are cold-blooded and cannot control their internal body temperature. Burrowing underground protects them from extreme summer heat or freezing winter conditions.

💧 Conservation: Toads have permeable skin that needs to stay damp. Soil provides a cool, humid microclimate that stops them from dehydrating.

🙈 Protection and Hiding: Submerging themselves helps toads stay invisible from birds, snakes, and other predators during the daylight hours, as they are naturally nocturnal

😴 ☀️ Brumation and estivation: When winter arrives, toads dig deep below the frost line to enter brumation (a reptile and amphibian form of hibernation). During severe dry spells or droughts, they use a similar dormant state called estivation to survive without food or water for months.

Here’s me wondering why I have no bookings for next weekend … apparently I didn’t reset the space from last month so it looked like I was fully booked 🤦‍♀️

Due to a family event of the landowners there will be no forest school next weekend … but I will still be hosting my monthly session 😃

Anyone know where May disappeared? I’ve been busy with lots of birthdays and a little holiday to the south of France. Now time to switch my brain back into gear.

Next Sunday is the first weekend in June so forest school fun it is! As usual booking are all online via the website! What fun shall we get up to next week? Any much loved activities you’d like to see out?

Looking forward to seeing lots of happy faces next Sunday 3rd of May at forest school! The morning is looking pretty busy now with only a few spaces left in the 9am and 11am sessions. Still plenty of space in the afternoon though, it looks like the sun will be shining for us as well ☀️ 😃 🐞 🐦. Bookings all available via the website
