Growing your karate
When a student starts in a club their instructor effectively gives them the seeds to start growing their karate. The seeds are always the same, a few basic techniques to get them started.
The student plants their seeds & their karate begins to grow, the instructor helps their karate to grow by teaching them new things as they learn. Think of it as a karate tree with lots of branches all intertwined & all grown from those initial seeds.
So why then are people's trees different sizes? Why are no two people's karate the same if they all come from the same seeds?
Well for a start no two people are the same so the trees will always need different things to grow, everyone learns differently. A good instructor will figure out how to make your tree grow.
Students soon realise that it's not just their instructor who can make their karate tree grow, if they practice they can make their own tree grow. They can also help others to grow their trees by being a good training partner or eventually passing on some of their own knowledge, in turn their own tree grows alongside those who they are helping.
Sometimes students don't understand why their tree isn't growing quickly enough, it could be because they aren't giving it enough attention & don't understand that its not just down to their Instructor to make it grow. Or it could be they just cant find enough time to give to their tree. Sometimes students pick up an injury, they have to learn to find different ways to keep their tree alive.
When growth slows for whatever reason, many students decide that it's time to leave the dojo, sometimes they feel disappointed with themselves or resent others for growing their trees quicker then they could themselves. Sometimes the instructor or club just isn't the right environment for their tree and they realise they need to take their karate elsewhere. Sometimes they keep their tree at home for too long and simply forget how much they love growing it in the dojo!
Whatever happens though they will always have those seeds and when the time is right and if they want to they can begin to grow it again. They will always remember who gave them those seeds. 🌳🥋
